^^ This ^^
Effects processing is the art of using effects on sounds. This means that the original sound doesn't have an effect on it, but after processing, the sound does have effects on it.
You can 'process' a sound with effects in three ways.
1> Offline processing, where the sound effect is calculated and applied to a prerecorded sound before it may be heard.
2> As a live insert effect, whereby an entire live audio signal is passed through an effects processor.
3> As a send effect, whereby only a portion of a live singal is sent to an effect processor. The effected 'wet' signal is then mixed back into the uneffected 'dry' signal.
Common effects include filters, reverb, delay, chorussing, phasing, flanging, distortion and compression.
yeah thats what i originally thought but in some post excision made he was talking about how to achieve his sort of sound was a matter of resampling and effect processing. if adding effects is just what he ment then i guess the question of which vst's are good to use when it comes to making and really evil large sound? i dont have any effect plug ins i just use ableton and massive. what are some good ones?
ableton probably has all the fx you need (and more) to make any kind of sound that you want to make.
Just take a break from trying to imitate that sound and making bangers for a minute, and focus just on learning ableton and massive and synthesis and some of the techniques involved in production.
You want to go to university to get a doctorate in advanced mathmatics, but you don't know how to add two plus two yet. There is a road ahead of you. The sooner you start to focus on learning your tools and techniques, the sooner you will achieve your goal of major bangage.

The general area that you are looking for is distortion.
But look, that's not the point, the point is work on your fundamentals first.

What kind of growl do you mean?
Like that?
Thats done by over drive then lowpass then again over drive just subtley
For the other kind ( what you're probably on about..) apply the same effects just play the notes higher, like in the mid range

@Nowaysj - Yes learning is important, but surely asking questions is a good sign of wanting to learn? Let's face it, there are hundreds of synths and effects to choose from. While for the most part many can achieve the same thing, a few of them produce nicer sounds more easily. Quadfrohmage is an example. Compare any freeware lowpass filter to the ones found in Quadfrohmage, and you'll notice the difference immediately!
Can't knock someone for asking which tools are best, even though I understand that eventually one needs to learn how to use those tools to effectively wield them.
@legen4ary - lol

Pat, op doesn't even know what effects ARE, and he wants to reproduce a super polished producer's sound. No doubt this is the first step, but I stand by "fundamentals first", like maybe reading the bible or watching some tutorials on music production, anything to get a grounding in what production entails. No knock to op.

Dude , sorry but i have to say this:
CREATE YOUR OWN SOUND OR FUCK OFF!
I only see posts with "Datsik this, Exiscion that". FIrst off these guys suck imo. Always the same howllow bassline
and drums i can arrange with my eyes closed while eating pork underneath the sea.
These guys aren't that great producers and their bassounds aren't either. If you wanna copy other producers and
never in your life create your OWN sound and tunes, fine, but atleast copy some GOOD artists.
Damn who made Datsik etc the midrange cack kings all of a sudden??

true, i've been away some time but was on here everyday (different name though).
And it was always like this indeed...
p.s. To the OP, if you succeed in "producing" a Datsik bass, make a full track and please send it to Datsik or
all the other false idols you copy. Cos if i was Datsik i would've kicked your ass and stopped making the same shit.
Maybe that way you'll learn from it and Datsik suddenly becomes creative!

Kinda harsh dude. The guy doesn't even know what effects processing is and you are expecting him to create something never heard before.
You see, the most important part of that entire tirade was just three letters. I. M. O. In your opinion. A lot of people seem to like that sound and want to be able to produce like that. If we didn't have tracks or artists to aspire to then chances are nobody would be getting inspired to get into producing in the first place.
Personally, I think ever sub-genre within dubstep has it's merits. I don't like R & B, that doesn't mean all R & B producers are shit, they do what they do and they have their fans and that's cool, it just ain't me.
Perhaps take your negativity elsewhere, and let those with something constructive to say help the OP out?
OP, sorry your thread got hater hijacked. In response to your original question, Futures Untold pretty much got you covered there. In respect of 'growl', distortion is your best friend. There is a thread up top about Datsik and Excision type sounds, there is some good info in there. Just bear in mind, your attempts will sound like cack at first, it's a learning curve and takes a lot of patience and practice. My efforts still sound shit tbh, but I keep practicing. Getting better! Stick with it.
