Does anyone use Myspace these days?

Post by hayze99 » Wed Jul 21, 2010 7:02 pm

I'm curious as to what you guys think of the whole media war.

I only use Soundcloud and Mixcloud, but it seems like it gets less reception than Myspace and Youtube, only with a higher concentration of likeminded individuals.

I've been thinking of ramping up my MySpace + Youtube game for a while now, but it seems like it's all dying down.

What do you guys use for promo?

yeah... it exists because it has to. Until something else replaces it on that scale, it is what it is.

1 in 13 people on the planet have a facebook. I'm pretty sure myspace can't compete with that. Myspace is dying.

SOCIALLY, facebook is the new myspace.

But MUSICALLY, myspace is still serious. If you don't have a myspace page you don't exist. I check my favourite musicians myspaces constantly. And as soon as I hear of someone new I google for a wikik or a myspace. Myspace still has its worth.

Soundcloud is, to me, indispensable, but its a behind the scenes tool from musician to musician, "regular people" will never ever flock to it to discover your material. Ever.

I agree that it still has worth, but I still think facebook can be a far more effective tool if you use it right. There's less competition (well, less noticeable competition anyway, because most people are still using myspace, or are using facebook but not effectively), less spam, less advertising, less meaningless band to band wanking in comments sections and it's easier to advertise and to figure out what your demographic looks like and start targeting more like that demographic. The thing about facebook is that like you said, it's for social networking, using facebook means you're not wasting time spamming other bands, you're going right to the source, you're going to the people with your music.

Also calling it a 'social networking site' doesn't do it justice. People seem to forget how much of our social interactions revolve around music.

Social networking is more than adding your friends and leaving silly messages on each others' walls. Today alone I posted about 7 tunes by bands I like, I see updates from deadly every day posting new tunes, whyrez posts a good few too, in fact everyone I know on facebook posts tunes and links their friends to new bands and posts youtube and soundcloud links and links to blogs. The only difference between my interactions with my friends on facebook and in real life, is that on facebook, its online, the way I interact with my friends on facebook doesn't change with how I do it in real life, its more than just comments to let people know what you're up to.

One of two things is going to happen though, facebook will adapt to become even more musician friendly than they already are and myspace will die, or alternatively a new musician friendly networking site will crop up and replace myspace, and it's not going to be long before either of those two things happen because shit moves pretty damned fast on the internet. My money is on the first happening since 1/13 people on the planet have a facebook it holds a pretty strong monopoly on the social networking game, it would be hard for anybody else to break through and not only topple myspace but also compete with facebook.

Myspace does still have a use. Definitely, I wouldn't argue with that. The only thing I'm trying to say here really is that I think facebook can be used as a more effective tool for establishing a real web presence and if that isn't true right now, it will be very true very soon.

I do wish it would go away completely but it's still there and people will still click to it if they google you are something. I disabled my comments and have a beatport player up that automatically updates itself. It is a good idea to have some links up there referring people to where you really are at. If they don't get the hint and bug the myspace inbox well fuck em I read that shit about 3 times a year lol you are probably late tings.

I never use myspace.. I logged on the other day for the first time in a few years just to promote my soundcloud..
I wish it would fold too.. I'm not a fan of all the fancy shit that artists do.. and the player sucks ass.
To me it just seems immature. Everyone spamming everyone.. Can you leave comment on individual tracks??
..just my 2cents

as for youtube.. I don't get the point in posting my song so people can watch a picture to it.. If I come out with some sort of music video or blog/tutorials, them sure I'll use it for that.. but use it as a source for my tracks!!

I deleted my account a while ago. it was really rare to get a response from anyone I wrote to on there, the comments where generally spam, and I couldn't be bothered updating it. I thought it would be better to only have up to date profiles on the net and not have a dead page, so yeah gone.

It's just another way to get exposure. I think I've had over half my plays on youtube. I actually don't know anybody who doesn't use youtube for music.

Actually, its quite a useful tool, while I don't log on as much as I used to... Ive contacted various big name DJs/Producers and gotten feedback from them post-facebook revolution via myspace...

Though, generally its spamvilla

EDIT: Since Facebook caters for "connecting" with friends and family and keeping up-to-date with eachothers lifes it means that a lot of the general population have forgotten about myspace, so thus only visit there when they want to find music or something.. This is a good enough reason to have a myspace, though your soundcloud may pop up first on a google search they "might" not know what a soundcloud is, look 2 links down, see a myspace and click taht instead ... Think about it, for people to find you, you have to be at a place where they can find youIin an enviroment what they reconise, like are you going to travel 200 miles to see your favourite band at a new venue or to your local venue what you know is good and safe?

Even if you log in once a month and only upload 3 tunes ... its good to have one still.
