DO NOT... (A mac user's nightmare)

DO NOT change file permissions for your entire hard drive. I've spent a good few weeks trying to get my mac up and running again after I did. In the end had to get the install disks off the shop where I bought it from and reinstall the OS (kept all my files though which is a bonus)
On the plus side it's now working better than ever before and I've just restarted my sample library from scratch after a good few years so looking forward to building it up with only the best sounds I can find/make.
Just thought I should warn people before they might make the same mistake I did, if anybody has any other

moments feel free to share.

Ouch what the fuck did you do? Take away permissions from everything?

Ouch. Always wondered what it would be like to start a laptop from scratch again. Not do what I did first time which was get as much warez as possible etc, just keep it streamlined. Be nice I think. I'd be gutted to lose my sample library though, but you're right there is lots of crap in there. Will avoid ever changing file permissions!

i've had to do it twice. second time i backed up all my samples but lost all my warezed plugins so all my old project files are redundant. might go back through and remake everything, but it feels quite nice having a fresh start with no illegal software.

Just to make it clear my sample library was intact, I just hated going into that unorganized mess of a folder *shudders* so deleted it myself.
ironically enough I changed all the permissions so that they could all be read and write by everyone (you'd think that it would make it quicker for it to work) but no just left it dead as a duck.

That's not what redundant means

well obsolete means 'behind the times' to an extent does it not? i think it works, got to be a little lenient nowadays, maybe extra marks for creative use of language on internet forum?

How exactly did this happen, eg. did you right click on your system drive, click 'Get info', then change the permissions from there? Or was it some maintenance application that changed the permissions?
Reason I ask, I use a maintenance app called Onyx, it does something called 'repairing permissions', but I haven't had any issues so far...

nah, if its "repairing" them, it's most likely just setting permissions to the way they should be
i still dont understand how enabling read/write for everyone can fuck your computer so bad. what happened after you did that, if you dont mind sharing?

Yeah I use onyx too but that's fine.
I did right click get info and set everything to read and write (including enclosed files)
After it had finished I went to bed, woke up in the morning and switched on the mac only to find it freeze at the grey startup screen, after a while the fans came on reallly loud but nothing and I had to turn it off by holding down the power button.

ouch
the permission change probably allowed some application (possibly even a virus, although it's a stretch) to go ahead and do something it shouldn't have
could've also been a coincidence though
must've been a terrible headache trying to get that fixed though
also, are you a masochist, by any chance? I can't imagine going through the pain of restarting my sample library. if i lost that, i'd probably kill myself

Thing is it could be a virus, but my guess from all this is that the system files should be left alone, even slight changes (filename, permissions etc) make it hard/impossible for them to find each other which is probably why it all went to hell in the first place.
and the thing with the sample library, it was all clutter If I'm using less than %5 of it and the other %95 is getting in the way/making it harder for me to find files and write tunes then I may as well chuck it right?

Are you referring to repairing file permissions? Cause I do that all the time as normal maintenance....you must be talking about something else?

Nope as said before repairing file permissions is fine (this is one of the things that actually helped me when it all went down the pan)
it's when you manually change all of the file permissions for the system files yourself.

now have 4 drum packs and have created my first kick drum of many to come
