ok so basically i've just landed a VERY good deal on a used pair of adam a5's. Although I'm worried that as they only go down to 55Hz i'm going to need a sub to get the bass response needed to clearly hear my sub lines. I've been looking at the matching sub for the A5's the Sub7, but i've heard it can be quite tricky to add a sub to a set up and get it right. Bearing in mind i'm monitoring in quite an enclosed space has anyone got any advice of placement/ sub levels/ crossover points or whether doing this could potentially mess up my mixes. Even better if anyone has any experience with or owns a pair of A5's some advice would be much appreciated.

If you can, I'd get your monitors into your space first, then evaluate what the bass response is like in that room.

(I needed a sub for my krk 5's - I keep the crossover quite low, and the volume quite low. Truly just trying to build a bridge into the low end that the 5's just can't do. If you want to do it properly, you should use a spl meter and take all kinds of measurements blah blah blah. Let someone else tell you about that. Someone a touch smarter.)

cheers man, yeah i feel i might be jumping the gun abit thinking about a sub before the monitors even arrive. I originally had my heart set on a pair of A7's which have much better bass response but I managed to get a pair of practically new A5's on ebay for £180 for the pair! Which is an absolute steal, so i thought I could use all the money i'd saved and invest in the matching sub, but i'm thinking i'll see if I can cope without first.

Anyone here having good results producing dubstep/ bass music with just 5" monitors without a sub? Am upgrading from 8" behringer truth's you see, which are very coloured but have a decent bass response and am just wondering if I'm going to really miss having that low end response

I'm using M1 Active's with I think a 5" or a 5"2 woofer, at first it was a bit of a hassle and I was mixing my sub too loud, but once you know what they sound like, it's fine, you can mix on them, check the track in my sig - bass is pure sub, I had no trouble hearing that on mine, and that was about 40hz!

Most important thing is to take the time to learn what your monitors sound and frequency response is like, and you shouldn't need a sub!

I have a pair of krk 5's myself....nowadays i just use my headphones to get the sub right....and that is working fine for me atm:)

I would recommend doing that on headphones instead.
In my oppinion having a sub in a not 100% controlled/treated environment will cause more harm/confusion than good.
There's very little in common between a home sub and a club setups subsystem.
