I got an email today in response to a demo today it said "you can hear that it is a midi & sample based production. There is nothing bad in using samples or midi plug ins. But it is bad, when you can hear that its based on that."

I have no idea what they mean....

Sounds like they think you downloaded midi files to use with your synths as oppose to writing it yourself ????

maybe the a&r guy felt that your music had no depth or feel to it.
it sounded like a bunch of midi notes and samples you threw together, and had no cohesion.
that would be my guess.
then again he could just be an idiot.

Post up a link!
If you're trying to emulate real instruments he could mean that it sounds too mechanical and not human enough. Or maybe your drums don't have enough groove or swing.

Did you use general MIDI sounds or instruments? Like GM horns or drums?
Or naybe it was a label that doesn't deal in electronic music often.

i doubt he meant electronic music in general

did you use non-multi sampled horns/keys etc? if so they definitely "stand out" from the repitching/stretching and maybe he was referring to that

either way just do what you do

well considering that once you record it it becomes sampled audio...

yeah well i dunno, you did say make music, you dont have to record it to make it. Anyway though if you do a straight recording like recording a band, its not really a sample. its just recorded audio. it would sound natural too, even if you get like a 4 bar loop it would sound natural, shakers can be looped after 1 bar and sound natural, but like if you use like a guitar riff of 1 bar it would sound heavly sampled.

but yeah, like my first tunes sounded shit, there was something about them that just sounded really midi and shit, but you get others making tunes based solely on 808 drum machines and 80's synths and they sound good.

To me it sounds like they're saying your tune sounds like cut and paste hiphop style but dubstep (I'm guessing its dubstep).
