The easy way is just to take a load of hallucinogenics, but it's temporary. You can get the same effect through meditation, but again, it seems only temporary.

Fair enough. She is a rather large target though, and indeed, self nominated 'evangelist' for that particular branch of faith though.

Its seems to be more about coming to terms with your identity and nurturing the soul. Ego will always be there as an interface between your soul & the world of situation. Its about balance between the instincts of the ego and the nurturing of the human soul. Our identity is a big part of our egos. The problem seems to arise when we try to restrict our ego with social/ political ideas like religion and morals.
Think of it this way :
Soul --- > Ego ---- > Real world
Getting rid of the ego is not the answer (imo.) It seems better to reconcile yourself with your identity and to nurture your soul, keeping the ego in check.
