SUBSTEP INFRABASS INTERVIEW + NEW SLAMMING TRACK
Posted: Sat Jul 31, 2010 9:17 pm
I decided to post here the interview made for one russian metal zine as it appears it is so D.I.Y (hand written and xerocopied
) that probably most people wont be able to reach it. So here it goes...
SUBSTEP INFRABASS is dark and evil dubstep project deeply rooted in brutal death metal scene which was formed in late 2008 and since then gained international recognition and found many followers. Music created by SUBSTEP INFRABASS is a crossover of really heavy mind blowing dubstep merged with brutal death/black metal and grind-core elements. From the conceptual side SUBSTEP INFRABASS is 100% loyal to his death metal roots. Dark, evil and gory climate is the thing which distinguishes it from the other 'heavy' dubstep projects. Today we are interviewing person who stands behind the success of the heaviest, darkest and most sinister project in dubstep history – ROB RECTAL.
1.Hello, I am glad that you found a moment to talk with me I believe readers are curious so I will go straight to the point - We can read about Substep Infrabass origins on its myspace page and this can give us the idea why your music is so dark, heavy and decadent but could you tell me what really inspires you and what’s the motivation behind the idea of Substep Infrabass.
First of all I am really glad that you decided to present Substep Infrabass to your readers. I’ll do my best to not to be as boring as we musical geeks can be and to make this interview worth reading.
Dark side of human existence is an inspiration for Substep Infrabass. In my opinion every human - you, me and even pope has this so called dark side within themselves. Substep Infrabass music tries to establish the connection with your inner evil giving food for your sinister thoughts.
Substep Infrabass links together two distant music worlds – death metal scene and dubstep scene. I think this is a win-win situation for both worlds as fans from both scenes can broaden their musical horizon and also I am able to compromise my old and new musical love and came up with my own sound.
2. Could you tell me why you started to produce Dubstep bearing in mind the fact that there are many electronic music genres? You could choose any genre, so why dubstep?Dubstep is an extraordinary genre of electronic music which allows me to express myself as a solo artist. It’s dark, heavy, modern, deep and very eclectic. You can found influences from many electronic and non-electronic music genres in there and that’s why it’s gaining more and more followers at the moment. Everyone can find there something for themselves. In my case it was massive heaviness and brutality in new, modern form. As far as you are concerned I used to play drums and guitar in brutal death metal and grind-core bands for nearly third of my life and when it all came to an end I found dubstep - something fresh, very innovative and extremely bass heavy. I felt in love with the sound and decided to take it in the whole new direction.
3. Could you describe your working process when creating new work?
My working process consists of three phases - conceptual, technical and promotional. In conceptual phase I am thinking about certain theme and I am trying to find relevant sounds and samples corresponding with my idea. Technical phase is all that hard work every electronic producer knows very well - composing, arranging, polishing and re-editing when something doesn't sound right but I promised to not be boring so I will skip geeky descriptions. Complete song is sent to labels, radio stations, dj's and trusted fans - and this is last but not the least important phase.
4.While listening to songs like ‘666’ or ‘Christus Chemicalus Cannibalus’ there is only one thing which comes to my mind – It looks like Substep Infrabass is the very first and the only one truly satanic dubstep project...
Listeners have always room for their personal interpretation. They can classify what they hear and see and it is completely understandable that this project can be considered as evil, sick, disgusting or generally speaking - satanic. That’s flattering that people are coming up with these ideas but everybody needs to understand that Substep Infrabass is creating disturbing sonic art and certain elements are part of its imagery.
5. With what symbols your music is associated with?
Gore art is the ultimate symbol of Substep Infrabass. I think Substep Infrabass is the only one, truly project which follows the path of blood and splatter in the old classic death metal way. Yeah, there is one individual on the scene who also tries it – but all this ‘gore’ in his case is not something real nowadays to say at least.. Substep Infrabass always cooperates with the gore artists to deliver you the sickest artworks known to dubstep scene. Artwork to ‘’Rooted in Immense Brutality’’ was painted originally on canvas and it took a real deal of time to get everything finished – but u can only imagine how sick it looked on the wall by my bed…
6. Could you tell us something about the younger, experimental brother of SUBSTEP INFRABASS?
The project is called SUBSTEP INFRABASS EXP™ and it represents intelligent approach to dark, ambient influenced and bass driven music. This is the 2nd face of my music production work – completely different from the original, heavy hitting S.I. Those productions are released by F4TMusic (http://www.f4tmusic.com), Echodub (http://www.echodub.co.uk) and Apparition (http://www.myspace.com/apparitionrecordings). Everyone who is interested please follow the link to official myspace - http://www.myspace.com/substepinfrabassexp
7. Your alias is totally unusual…Is there any story behind it? Not everyone is called Rob Rectal…
Yeah this alias is disgustingly unusual but the story behind it is very simple. During me teenage years I played in band called RECTAL SLUDGE… and the rest is a big unknown – when, where and who first called me like that but it simply stayed...
7. Could you familiarize us with Substep Infrabass plans for the future?
Substep Infrabass EP entitled ‘’Rooted in Immense Brutality’’ is about to be released by Bass Punch Records and also one remix of Substep Infrabass tracks will be released as a part of ‘Future Klassiks II’ compilation. In the meanwhile I am working on new tracks and I am trying to give momentum to another project of mine – SATHEISM PROMOTIONS & RECORDINGS – label and promotional area for metal influenced dubstep. Also there is a remixing competition going on where all interested producers can remix one of my tunes in order to be featured on next SUBSTEP INFRABASS EP – you can clearly see that I am quite busy with musical and non-musical aspects of S.I existence and I am doing everything to prove everyone that SUBSTEP INFRABASS is the first contender for the Dubstep Heavyweight Championship (lol).
8. Would you like to add something?
I’d like to thank you for this opportunity and I’d like to say BIG MOTHERFUCKING UP to all the people who supported SUBSTEP INFRABASS in 2 years of existence – fans, fellow producers, labels and other scene freaks I met…KEEP IT SICK AND KEEP IT UNDERGROUND!
