I am trying to put on a night in a small venue in London (won't name it yet) with about 100 capacity and a funktion one sound system.

I have some big name DJ's confirmed and want to sell tickets at 5 pounds each.

How much should i be paying for the venue hire?

£5 x 100 = £500
2 big ish djs at £150 = £300
3 smallish djs at £20 = £60

so £140 or less? unless you plan on losing money?

best way forward is to work out some sort of bar deal with the venue, get them to pay you!

Nothing.

All you should be paying is promotional costs (flyers, costs, websites etc), staff you employ to do work for you and security for the venue and Dj's obviously. The bar should charge you nothing as they make a silly amount of profit from the bar.

bigish Dj's for £150?

Smallish DJ's for £20?

wut?

You shouldn't be paying for venue hire. Thats what the bar is for, unless it's like Matter for example.

I doubt he's talking about having skream play this 100 cap venue...But as far as i can remember people like Crises, Unitz, Benton etc charge roughly that much. Smallish i.e. Friends of yours who's travel your paying for.

Venues should not charge you to hire the place, your bringing them custom.

The only involvement imo venues should have is if you have struck up a deal for artists, so they take majority of ticket sales if they front the cash for artists.

I bet the venue want to charge £250. If the capacity is only 100, with a Funktion One sound system, the venue probably don't think they can make enough money from the bar to cover their cost of supplying the sound system. You could ask to pay nothing but the venue can then say they need £250 for the sound system (and security). Good luck!

Sam, just do it for free that way you won't risk loosing anything. Names don't bring in custom. Promoters do.

most places, even the shitty dives will charge you for a venue hire, especially if you're a) small time and b) have no previous experience of running a night

they need to uphold some sort of reputation and its bad for business for any club how small to be hiring for free and paying staff to work at an empty event, its shitty but you'll have to fork out

that said, if they have a funktion one, thats part of your promo done already!

I've always got venues for free lol. I guess its different up North. :) I mean obviously if you want to run a promo at Corsica Studios then you're gonna have to fork out money but as you say depends on your rep etc!!

Right, thanks for everyone's help. Ended up sorting something out at the Gramaphone (East London) in the end. Here's what we've come up with:
