I have stuff in a couple of galleries and have been published in the Guardian, BBC and Independent. However because I am a fuckwit I let my domain name with my website expire and I am too lazy to sort it all out and get a new one.

I try to use a 28mm or a 50mm prime lens only, never use a flash and I generally try and take photos of things that I think will look good in B&W.

i'm looking to get a prime lens next, but keep getting different advice...some people say get 80mm, i've tried a 50mm and quite like it, and other people are telling me to get a 35mm- any ninjas with opinions? (i've got a d3000)

It depends what your shooting, personally on a cropped sensor camera (d3000 and most DSLRs) I find even 35mm to long, a 50mm makes a nice portrait lens. I'm still stuck with film and mainly use a 40mm lens (which would be a 28ish on cropped cameras )

i don't really shoot anything in particular as i'm still a pretty casual photographer, i got the 50mm because i wanted a nice portrait lens to go with the the 18-55 stock lens the camera came with (i still use it, you can tell i'm a newbie ha)

i sometimes find the 50mm a bit tight for what i need, which is why i'm thinking of the 35mm- it's partly money related also, as i need an af-s lens to be able to autoshoot and the 35mm one is a lot cheaper than the 50mm

basically i'm after a good all-round lens (very fucking vague i know!), i'm going travelling in a month so i'm after something that'll handle cities, nature and people pretty well, i'm no pro so i'm not too much of a perfectionist

the last one's seriously grainy as in my infinite idiocy i've developed a habit of leaving the iso high after night shooting and forgetting to change it the next day

I have a Nikon D50, D80 and a D300.

I have the same Prime lens. But isn't it an F/1.8?

All my above photos posted were taken with that lens. I swear it's the only lens I use. Massive agreement on it being the best lens. Ever.

They do two, mate. The f1.8 and the f1.4, the f/1.4 is about £200 new but the f/1.8 is only about £80, I agree it's the best lens I have ever used and that includes a Carl Zeiss lenses!!

Sigma do a 28 -70mm f/2.8 lens for about £50 new that is very good, I quite liked mine... until it took about twenty shots from a paintball gun and clogged up the threads

Oh my. F 1.4. INSANE.

I have a D90 with a variety of lenses but never use it and well into my film.

I have a 28mm f2.8 and the 50mm f1.8. And agreeeeeeeed on the Bokeh. The depth of field when focusing is so damn accurate too.

You are mad to take your camera on paintballing!? Mentalist!!!

You can pick up the f/1.4 on ebay if you're patient and wait for someone to get rid of their gear, I have picked up a couple of Carl Zeiss lenses from there for next to nothing. Check out charity shops too for old lenses, you can literally get a £1k lens for about £10 in a charity shop because everyone has gone digital... and the premium Nikon DSLRs can still take none D lenses

I don't take the D80/300 paintballing - only the D50

if you want selective focus with fast lenses like f.2.0, 1.8, 1.4.... i highly recommend getting a lens baby. At first its a bit cheesy, but if you use it in backlight or with strobes, you'll be amazed at the results. its an adapter that uses a eos digital mount, and you place your lens into it.
