so whats people's opinion on Serato, Limewire, Final scratch? Ive been using Serato for a while now, I still purchase vinyl, but alot can be hard to come by so I pick up the mp3s. I live in Phoenix, there are practically no record stores which support electronic music in general, so Im purchasing alot online. But alot of times Im forced to purchase over seas, and its massive shipping, the dollar isnt what it used to be. Taboo to use?

I use torq and think gettin high quality mp3s are a good thing, however I think they should be purchased.

I use about half Final Scratch half vinyl when i spin and i love it.

and no record stores in phoenix? we were in tempe/mesa for a little while and i know of at least 3 well stocked record stores on the main drag. of course i don't know how close tempe/mesa is to phoenix, my arizona experience is very limited.

Rob Noble and Zacharia have been rinsing their setups all over town, I think its fantastic...Now that theres a decent alternative to Final scratch Im stoked. That thing was SO buggy, you couldnt trust it at a show. Me and dirty steve are looking into getting a setup for my new laptop. Your fault, Zach and Rob!

Now, I'm not sure why Limewire got lumped with scratch live and final scratch, 2 are interfaces for manipulating digital audio, the other is for stealing music...

i dunno what serato is but yes i do use final scratch sometimes, but i try not to use it too much because the sound quality to me just does not compare to vinyl no matter how high quality the sound file is. it may not even be a matter of sound quality but..... sonority perhaps.... it just sounds deeper and has more to it. but mp3s can be fun to spin. i always either buy them or copy from my cd's.

i feel you man on the overseas shipping and shit. there aren't any good record stores in boston anymore either, and buying in £ really kills.

Ive had Serato for around two years now and LOVE it! It has totally changed how I think about spinning and made it possible for me to spin multiple styles again without spending $300 a week on vinyl. In fact at the rate I was buying vinyl previously to owning Serato I paid for it in two months with what I saved on wax. The new features in 1.7 make it closer to Torq in terms of functionality. Torq is way better on features, but Serato is and will be the more stable prog. Its a Rane product after all. I say get it. Some in the electronic world may think its taboo, but in the hiphop world all the big cats are using it, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Rectangle, the Beat Junkies, ZTrip... Even Ritchie Hawtin, who invented Final Scratch, now uses Serato.

I have FS2, and its decent. Apparently FS1 was a nightmare to get working. You do get occasional issues with FS2 i find, but on the whole its pretty good. Athough I haven't tried it I can believe Serato might be better in terms of stability etc. though.

I find these things pretty essential especially if you produce or want to mix with music thats really tough to get hold of on vinyl. Even with the lightweight 'scratch' vinyls and the lowest latency setting on FS2 I wouldnt really say you can properly scratch though. For basic scratches to blend records it works O.K.

Ultimately I end up trying getting a vinyl copy of anything that sounds good in a mix, because real records just do sound better.
