hey guys... i was looking at oldschool 2 step songs and askd someone what distortion they used... they said its just when you put the gain up in your analogue mixer... and the closest he gets too it in vst wise is some of the functions in logic's bitcrusher

If it's coming out too bass heavy have to tried tweaking the eq? Maybe a high pass would do the trick.

I'd of thought that would have been similar to pushing it over the red on your master track, then render to audio. That way any of the errors will be saved when its played at a lower volume. He's also probably right that a bitcrusher is a similar effect, it just wouldn't be as strong.

Couldn't you just get a guitar amp vst or a distortion unit (Fuzzplus 2? Camel crusher?) and just max out the gain?

This'll just sound like hard clipping, ie nasty.

Driving an analog mixer is, AFAIK, not something that's been widely emulated in software -- it's possible, for sure, but not as marketable as something like a guitar amp. Your best bet is probably just a decent waveshaper with an analog clip curve, though there's more to it than just that.

Buy a decent analog mixer. ;)

As far as free saturation/warmth plugins go, how about Ferox, Bootsy's NastyVSD (or anything else by Bootsy), TS's Secret (warning that this one is mono), Digital Fish Phones' THD.

Sometimes small amounts of digital clipping can be nice to get some crispy drums. If you DO want digital clipping, you can save yourself the trouble of over-boosting your DAW's master by using GClip, Clip-R, or Advanced Clipper.
