Question For The Dubstep Purists

Post by illandnatti » Thu Aug 26, 2010 2:31 am

So yes there is a lot of hating on new styles of dubstep (bro-step, mellow-step, robo-step, whatever-the-fuck-step). Everyone has said it, and most everyone has contributed in one way or another (present company included), some of the shit that comes out these days just isn't good.

What I want to know (and this is a question for people who have been listening to dubstep for years now, not the noobs who think they know what dub is after hearing Skream's 'In For The Kill' remix) is what artists do you guys feel are putting out good music today among all the riff raff?

Yes I know that Benga, for example is or has been somewhat of a rockstar and he has made a lot of tunes that I think everyone can agree on are awesome. However, even he is going off the deep end a bit, it seems, with this whole Magnetic Man thing.

This is definitely not something I would personally expect the guy to make and put out under his name, but I guess it pays the bills. So who do you guys support still?

I'm mostly talking about people who have been listening to the genre long enough to see it evolve, and who know what the they're talking about.

This...

and to the OP I asked the same question how Magnetic Man and Skream's new album haven't gotten slandered for being too 'mainstream'. When Rusko's album dropped everyone freaked out.

Personally I can tell when A tune is about money, it just feels soulless.

I don't like Magnetic man at all, but love the producers solo. It just seems like a marketing gig to me, and it takes away from the music.

best bet is to figure it out for yourself. Like what relates to you.

A bunch of clubbers chanting "I need Air" over and over doesn't do it for me, too commercial.

Yea cheese doesn't get much hate on here compared to filth (or cheesy filth) probably bcos its not as nasty on the ears

I say fairplay to any artists getting a bit of commercial success though, anyone who tells you being skint all the time is good is talking out their arse - sure a few deep producers have done quite well (as in far from stinking rich but comfortable) but most of them where there at the beginning so don't face the sort of political closed doors that many newcomers/outsiders encounter with purist/deep but not more popular forms of dubstep which most ppl on here seem completely ignorant of

It does seem to me sometimes that many on here seem to also be ignorant to the concepts of the influences of women (when you gonna bring some fucking money in or get a real job etc), kids and mortgages etc - sure some djs are blantantly trying to get paid as much as possible as quickly as possible and have no commitments in their life other than their own egos but many of us are just trying to get by and mabeye in the current climate have to compromise a bit on what projects we take and some of the music we write to make ends meet. Seems a pretty fucking stupid situation on this forum when theres a big silence over the biggest names in the scene getting some major £ (not that im saying they should be getting any grief over it as its a good thing) yet other producers get called a sellout for putting out a sample cd or a filthy 12 that sells barely more than 1000 copies etc?

Sorry that rant probably wasnt directly related to this thread just a reaction to the last few whining threads ive seen on here thats sort of relevant to this one

having watched the genre grow and change over the years, i'm really feeling these people lately and enjoy that they are bending the "rules" of the genre, keeping me interested and entertained:

james blake
mount kimbie
joy orbison
burial
ramadanman
distance
silkie
starkey

and borgore

(haha, one of those is jokes i swear)

This, plus.

Cyrus.
Headhunter.
Icicle.
Tunnidge.
Quest.
Kromestar.

Basically, people who was smashing up the scene the first couple of years I got into it are still holding the bar of how to make good dubstep in my opinion! (plus a few new ones whos been doing it right for me though!)

What's the average age of members here?

Oh, and besides many of the names already mentioned, I'm partial to the odd bit of Dead Boy (who hasn't been mentioned yet) - loving his recent Drake remix.

It's not the average age of members here.

It's the average age of people you go and watch..

Average age is easily 27-30.

At least every Dubstep DJ I know and talk to on a personal level has either a child or a mortgage. A few have both.

As you can see there are many artists who are still putting out good music. I just feel that they are not being recognised by the noobs who go striaght into the filth side of dubstep :x

Very true... I remember when I first came on this forum and I was one of the youngest members haha.. The scene has quite a mature fan base in the grand scheme of things

Only when you look past the trend it has a mature fan base.

And when I say trend, I mean the sound the majority of the "up and coming" sway towards when they're starting off to try and create the biggest impact.

It's obviously not about who is playing your tunes anymore, but how many YouTube views you have :(
