dont get me wrong, I own and love benga and skreams material, just dont feel this whole magnetic man marketing gig. maybe it will grow on me but the tracks i've heard so far aren't relating to me in any way :t:

They aren't supposed to. The Magnetic Man thing is obviously geared towards the mainstream, which for the most part, isn't really going to appeal to the dubstep cliques. Fair play to Magnetic Men though, they're definitely getting things done.

people wouldnt be starting these threads if producers hadnt started giving away free EPs.

you should be happy for the stuff you are being given for free, without asking for more! not meaning to be a dick or anything, but it seems almost ungrateful.
plus if all those old dubs just got handed out for free cause loads of people asked for them, they wouldnt be as special!

seems like music is losing its value, all music will end up being free, and i dont reckon thats a good thing.

This, be happy that people are givin away stuff for free!

But I don't agree with the last comment - there's so much piracy and so many places to buy cheap music, there's little-no money in it anyway. Anyone can start up a label from their bedroom and get tracks out there with litte effort, and it's reflected in the music prices.

I think there's a solid argument behind free music and that is that it will encourage a feeling of community where the artists are closer to the fans, more of a connection. The fans feel that the person they are a fan of cares about them and that the artist respects the fans (without them they are nothing).

Also, free music would encourage more people to go live shows and performances (which is where the money is made now anyway), and buy merchandise etc.

Obviously this only applies for digital, physical releases would have to still cost some money...

That's my opinion anyway

this is kind of my point, 10, even 5 years ago music had a value, but through piracy and the ease of setting up a "digital label" (which covers a broad spectrum of music vendors, from an alternative outlet for a major vinyl label to some guys shitty unmastered tunes he made last night) means music is losing its value, to the point where people think its ok to ask people to hand out things theyve spent hours and hours crafting for free. i appreciate the value of giving out tunes for free as a promotional tool but people need to see it as this, and not as something that should become the norm.

there is already little to no money in music anymore as you say, if this declines to the point where there is no money in it at all, surely less and less people are gonna be writing tunes? i know its nice to think of the people that would do it just for the love, and im sure theres plenty of people out there who would, but realistically, people gotta eat.

imho anyway, just food for thought i guess.

Yeah I get what you're saying and it is dissapointing, especially cos physical medium sales are going down, but imo donationware makes quite a bit - you can get a lot of money out of it, and people will still buy the physical releases if they wanted is my view on things. I completely get you on the digital label thing - it's opened up so much oppurtunity for crap music to get out there, but it's also given many people (like me for instance) an oppurtunity to take things more seriously and hopefully have a future doing what they love doing - you've just gotta sift through it all to find the good ones. I'm still happy to pay for my music, unfortunately a lot of this generation aren't, so in order to adapt you've gotta find another way to make your bread...imo.

I don't think music will never decline to the point of no money - pretty much all the money exists in the live shows now, and I'd hazard a rough guess that about 90% of a big artists income is his live shows, which is probably more than enough to put food on the table...

Yeah, food for thought completely...

Agreed, such a shame though. I kinda expected it to be a let down but secretly hoped it would be really good.
