Beginning Dubstep

My friend and I have been listening to Dubstep for about a year now and we really love it. So we wanted to start making our own, now, we have tried some basic stuff on FL and such. But we just have no idea where to start. I really am sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I just want to know what is best. Shame I am running a PC though...it seems MAC's are more valuable for this kind of thing...thanks in advance!

FL is great man :) dont put it down its a good daw :) alot of big producers use it if that makes u feel better ;) u suggest getting a few vst's like massive, albino and fm8 :) and the vengance sample packs :) but that is all u need man :) watch some tutorials and stuff :P this gets said alot but its not what u use its how you use it :)

Start with drums . get them solid and sounding punchy and interesting, then basslines, melodies etc around it :)

Have fun :P

Epic fail XD you are very wrong my friend. I hope you enjoy learning more about this wonderful art, lots of valuable information in the stickies up top. If FL is working for you then no need to make a switch or anything. It will do what you need it to. Hope to see you posting around the forum more and please for the love of god don't start making generic brostep cack. Be original, or at least steal from other genres as thats the closest to original anyone can ever really get. That's the best advice I can give..

Pretty much this expect I'll add that you should get more sample packs other than the vengance ones since I find myself getting bored of a certain samples packs and looking at others for different sounds etc. I would also suggest getting some of these vst's - Alchemy, Crystal, Sugar Bytes Wow etc. Finally it doesn't matter whether you use a Mac or PC, DAW etc, I've seen people make some fucking amazing music in FL, Ableton Live etc, its not the software its the person producing the music that can make good or shit music. Other than that, have fun and keep at it, you won't be good overnight but you will be if you keep at it. :D

You need a Mac to make music standard, remember iTunes is owned by Apple and that is were you will be selling your music so it makes sense no.

If your using FL:

Start by learning to build drum sequences using the sampler, step sequencer, and playlist. Focus on learning to write in halftime if your into dubstep, and I suggest you exand into a few other bpm's during this too... Try to imagine rhythms in your head and translate them onto the sequencer, then try to imagine them progressing and transfer those to the playlist. Youll probably learn alot about basica workflow in FL making drums alone, focus on leanring the sampler and doing simple tasks like cloning/renaming patterns, working with piano roll, setting velocities pan and pitch notes, ect.

Then move on to learning the mixer. This is where the bulk of your times gonna be speant. Select a channel in the step sequencer and hit CTRL+L to link it to a mixer track you select. Read the production bible and try to understand effects, effect chains, ect. and get creative with them. Learn a bit about automation while your here, turning some effect parameters and working with automation clips/event data patterns within the playlist.

Learn synthesis. 3xOsc is bundled in most of the versions of FL, and its oing to be your best bet as a place to start. Google up Additive and SUbtractive synthesis theory and try to understna dthe relevance of waveshape, harmonics, harmonic interaction, phase descrepencies, ect. Focus on learning simple patches first, Reese's, ect. before you move on to more advanced ones. Learn as much about the envelopes and lfo's withing 3xOsc as you can, and try to write some simple melodies or basslines. Once you feel like 3x isnt offering you enough versatility anymore, even when combined with effects, move on too either Sytrus (standard with most FL releases) or another more advanced synth (I recommend FM8, Atlantis, Massive, Blue, or Oatmeal).

Finally learn as much as possible about audio engineering technicalities, because by now you should be able to do virtually anytihng you can dream up from a creative standpoint. Proper mixdowns, treatment, compression, limiting, dynamics, ect.

Its going to take an extremely long time to master man. Ive been doing this for 2 years, djing for 5, and generally listening to EDM for 8, and Im still nowhere near the level I came into this wanting to reach. I dont get discouraged, I use it as a motivator. Its hard. Its work. Theres very little about it thats actually fun. But in the end, its so reqarding it unbelievable.

And also, dont ever doubt your tools man. I learned to dj with some walkmans and it took me over a year to upgrade FL from Demo so its not what you use, its how you use it, and your own skill. So dont think you need a Mac, there actually semi limited, and wont support VST plugins... And besides, most people will tell you, Mac vs. PC is a fake arguement.

Some good resources:::

fressound.org
DarkBeats sample exchange
Jeremy Evers blog
KVR
ect.

Google them, I cnat be arsed ot link you everythying. Get used to hearing that, 'I cant be arsed' cause 99% of the questions you have thats what your gonna get told. Take this one. You didnt need us to tell you any of this.

I worked for months simply composing/writing not giving a damn about production. (Why my first/only song on youtube sucks ass... ) It was much needed though. Learning both together can be unhealthy in my opinion because you'll be instantly wanting to apply both and get a little distracted. Learn about structure, sound synthesis, giving drum patterns a groove, etc before worrying about how pristine your tracks sound. Kinda random, but I hope this helps.

Best advice in any given act is to PRACTICE and experiment and all that good stuff. Yeah

Oh...

And if your writing dubstep..

1.
0---|---0---|---

2
0---|---|---0

3
0---0---|---0

0's mean dominant beats, lines are your 4's and 16ths. use kicks and snares. Dont get stuck in formula's.
