well, a DMZ night at WMC would've been amazing. WMC is the biggest electronic/dance music conference that we've got in america. it's every feb/march, and has been going for about ten years now. it's largely dominated by techno/house/DNB and soul. it's a shame nothing's happening this year on the dubstep front.pete bubonic wrote:What American nights are big enough or have enough representation? Would DMZ be able to organise something, it's a lot of of money involved.

Who gives a flying fuck !?
Surly the winter music conference is about house dj's poncing around on coke, believing they are the saviour of dance music because they have sampled some shit tune from the 80's ?
At this time, with Dubstep being SUCH a small scene, I can't see what good it would do to have something at the WMC. There is fuck all money to be made in this genre at the moment, so it's unlikely to be picked up on by the industry big-wigs.

it's not just a bunch of superstar dj's and their friends. people drive thousands of miles to see the shows. forget the big wigs, it's about the people in the audience.STEALTH wrote:There is fuck all money to be made in this genre at the moment, so it's unlikely to be picked up on by the industry big-wigs.
i know it sounds negative, but to clarify - I think it's INEVITABLE that there will be some sort of dubstep representation @ WMC either this year at the last minute or definitely next year, and whoever puts it together is very smart.
but that place is super political, and I'd like to see more local events pop off, or people booking the talent we have close by than jumping right into the viacom/cornerstone/industry party sharkdens...
anyways, I remember hearing about the jungle parties in 96 or 97, like Jeffee/ak1200 and them...but it didnt take long after that for the negative shit to creep in...

I rarely make such a negative post on forums, especially about an event I've never attended... but the coverage I've seen over the years of the WMC makes me want to distance myself as far as possible from any 'electronic music' scene. No doubt there are some good parties, and it's also true that some music forms are given a platform for exposure they wouldn't otherwise have - but the ethos of an event like this seems as polarised as you can get from the kind of grassroots network I see spreading this music.
Maybe I'm wrong.
