depends on what kind of beers your mate likes.

get some belgian beers... rochefort makes absolutely beautiful beers, the "8" is my fav. St. Bernardus makes excellent abbey ales, the abt 12, or the prior 8 is delish... a cool brewery out of canada called unibrou is run by some french people making delicious stuff. if you find their ephemere beer its like drinking a fresh sliced apple, but its beer not cider. their troie pistoles is a dark ale at around 7-9% i cant remember but it will get you fucked. Dogfishhead's Palo Santo if you can find it is awesome. Rogue's Double Dead Guy will murder your face...
