if you mean the original its probably leveled with the album, the whole thing has to have a consistency of volume to the ear and balance of elements.

EDIT: Makes me kinda wanna stop putting limiters on my tracks altogether :\ problem is then you have to turn the gain knob up LOADS when mixing your tunes with others... I normally push about 2 db over the limiter if that makes sense? Doesn't really feel like I'm squasing the dynamics to me but It's hard to tell when my ears are still quite untrained (though I can hear the difference in that vid is massive). Is that a reasonable amount to be limiting?

I've never even used a limiter once. Probably not the best of ways to produce but at least I don't sound like that lol.

well I would like to say that as a FL studio person the new version have the preset patch with a limiter on it and I find that it vastly helps my mixdowns on its default setting, it keeps everything a little bit more udner control. Limiters are great, don't be a bitch!
I would like to point out that I do not put a limiter on my final wav tho because It does have that tendency to fuck things up I love my dynamics and dont want them squashed into a fucked up mess.

i like limiting... it's not my fault!! whenever i listen to the radio, they've got the signal running with a hefty amount of squeeze... it just has a particular way of making the beat push itself around that can be very interesting.. it's what my ears are used to.
just like all tools, master limitering should be used subtly... too much is never a good thing

i use the slightest of limits for rendered versions i intend to play out. before i started doing this some of my errant peaks would make the occassional unpleasant noise. with just a touch of limiting (not to boost the volume, just to tame the peaks) i retain all my dynamic range without bursting audience eardrums.

You just blew my mind! How do you get such loud and punchy mixes then?? I assume your still mixing to between -3 to -6 but your tunes sound louder than mine which are brought up to about 2 over 0 with a limiter (which I have now just vowed to never do again lol XD)kaiori breathe wrote:I've never even used a limiter once. there are good limiters you know, like the uad precision limiter which is based on bob katz k-system
limiting just for the sake of it is kind of lame, but when used in conjunction with other mixing and mastering techniques properly it's a valuable tool

I think the relevance of the loudness war to dancefloor-based EDM is really overstated, to be honest, for two reasons:
1) Dancefloor EDM is, by its very nature, quite uniform in level anyway -- there's not much dynamic range to suck out. On the whole, "contrast" in EDM comes more from timbre than peak level. You're making tracks whose wobble bass is meant to be as loud as the wobble bass on the next track, no more, no less. It's not like you're destroying the energy of the chorus coming in from the verse. Of course, there are exceptions -- lots of shitty mainroom techno and electro being made where the breakdown is so compressed that you can barely hear the kick coming back in -- but IMHO it's not such a common problem. And if clubs had better soundsystems (which is really the issue here) you could master as quietly as you wanted and just turn it up at the DJ mixer (see point 2).
2) No matter how loud you master your track, on all but the best soundsystems it's probably gonna be hitting a limiter at the end of the chain anyway. Often better to make this happen at the mastering stage -- where the limiters used will probably be quite good -- than in the club, where they're probably running shit through a Behringer.
On the whole, though, I don't limit very much.
