NEED DUB DROP ASSISTANCE...

I use Pro tools M-powered 8, along with Reason 5...I have been really interested in the Dubstep genre but have run into one issue that's preventing me from finishing one of my dub projects. I haven't found a way to create the dubstep "drop"...I know how to make the wobble sounds and everything but I am having trouble creating the initial drop that most dubstep music contains and is considered to be the most important aspect of dubstep...I use combinator and the thor synth in reason 5 to create the wobble bass. For the drop they say to make 3 oscillators and use LFO to pitch, unison, and sine/saw waves but I don't have the right technique down... If anyone has any experiance or knowledge on this I would really appreciate it. Thanks

You can also make your intro quieter by 2-3 db.

Alright I misinterpreted your statement...but I already have the quiet part before the drop down, and still practicing... I'm I just need advice on the actual technique of creating the drop dub bass with Reason.

I'm not sure how to use Reason - played with it a bit and got over it pretty quickly.

However all I can say is just keep practising. Pay keen attention to what it is you're trying to achieve and try different methods.

One method I use is a simple bassline + pitch down when the kick hits. In order to make it really work though you need silence/no bass on either side.

Yeah I've been tryin different methods...sooner or later I'll get it I just hope someone on here has experiance with this technique. It would drastically improve some of my music.

For bass drops whatever synth or sampler you're using, play with the pitch envelope section. You can also assign an LFO to the pitch to get similar results. Another way is automating pitch. Quite a few ways really.

Not to be confused with the "drop" or start of the tune after the into.

dubstep is more than a just some beat that goes wob wob wob... it has deep roots that go far back... from tribal to modern... funk, hip hop, house, reggae, dancehall, garage, drum n bass.. all influences that can be heard in dubstep.. do you know much about music? if not you better start learning

now a drop? hardly a new concept. it's been a favorite part of rave tunes for daaays.. it's not particularly hard
each song is a story.. now stay with me..
there is a beginning, a middle and an end.. dance tunes usually have an intro that is relatively relaxed and sets the mood for is what to come. just like "once upon a time"
you want a drop that SMACKS your listener senseless, no??
well in that case.. during your intro you want to start with low energy and perhaps only light rhythmic or atmospheric elements. these must gradually build and build and build energy and suck the listener in... make them feel like something's coming. ascending pitch and doubling your rhythms again and again is a good way to build.
when you've built as much energy as you POSSIBLY can.... you are at the critical moment... do whatever you want here... cut everything... play a funny sample.. whatever is going to create an unexpected calm after all that noise....
THEN SMACK HIT EM WITH THE BASS
this is where the 'middle' comes in... the beat must have groove, soul, and some form of massive bass. the song will drop nicely if you follow these steps. of course that's not enough. once you've announced your presence you better have something to say.. wobbles are not enough in fall '10... you must have solid melodic and/or rhythm ideas that continue to progress..

it sounds like your after a particular sound in which case post in the "how do a make this sound" thread and post an example of what your trying to recreate. There isnt a certain sound used for drops, you could even use silence before your drop which can be very effective. As has already been said using pitch modulation, building up your percussion/drums, using some sort of vocal sample are all common techniques.

1. Open up your favourite VST. Ham works nicely
2. Set the first oscillator to +36 and the second to +37. Make sure you use a pure square wave.
3. Highpass filter
4. Pitch-shift down to -36 to get the crunch
5. Highpass filter again
6. Pitch-shift back up +36
7. Highpass filter
6. Stick an LFO on the timestretcher
5. Set the cutoff to "fresh" and sync the LFO to your penis
4. Just as the drop is about to drop, LFO the LFO
3. ...raise the highpass
2. ...LFO the LFO LFOing the other LFO
1. Drop the undercarriage
-5. Profit
-7. There is no -7

Oh wait, Reason doesn't do VSTs does it? Hmmmm. Oh well. I guess you can't make dubstep with Reason then. Sucks.
