at this point i wish i had the room/cash to get a full 88 key weighted
best bet is to get something with usb and midi ports, and with a few more functions, knobs and faders than you initially want/need

didn't know i'd get so many reply's so quickly, so thanks.
mmmm, im not gonna be playing out full blown mozart so i'd think just a little 37 key jobby might do the trick.
budget wise i'd say anything up to 80 quid unless that's just not acceptable? i havn't really done my research at all so forgive me.
in terms of knobs and dials i think it's always good to have the pitch bend and modulation type although most already come with them, it's also probably best to have plain old assignable knobs, around about 6 or above would be schweet. Oh yeh and indeed deadly i'd be going for the usb type.

the m audio keyrig 49 is very inexpensive if you just want something to mash around on instead of your keyboard. I'm happy with mine.

thats what I have, an maudio 49e, simple, cheap, hardwaring, does the business. 4 octaves + pitch and mod wheel, but no extra asignable knobs though.
If you think some twisters or drum pads would get a fair bit of use and you got the cash then maybe look a bit further up the price line.

and I cant go on enough about the joys of having an intrument attached to the pc rather than mouse/keyboard, for me its an essential.

usually don't have actual midi ports on them, but that doesn't matter to a lot of people

I love my axiom. Drum pads are important to me, and the knobs. It has pretty much all I need and there are different sizes depending on how many keys you want. Good price too.

both the alesis and m audio keyrig look like they'd do the trick. now to narrow it down to one... battle it out!

even though i recomend the alesis, i might have to go with the m-audio. i have a personally hate of m audio(every thing i have owned by them has broken), but i know a friend who has been rocking that m-audio for years.

I'm using an m-audio 02. It's not great, at all, but it's fair for what I use it for. I have a full 88 key keyboard my brother gave me sitting at another place, but I don't use it 'cause i don't have any actual midi inputs

both those controllers are awful imo.
if i had to pick one over the other, i'd go with the m-audio as well.
i've had my keyrig 49 for years, and i still have it to this day as a backup, and it works perfectly.
