A space ambassador could be appointed by the United Nations to act as the first point of contact for aliens trying to communicate with Earth.

it would be pretty boss if Mazlan Othman was your mum: "yeah, my mum is the space ambassador for extraterrestrial contact affairs. what does your mum do?"
realistically, they've just chosen some poor tnuc to be abducted or lazerblasted if alien life comes here and asks for who's in charge.

I feel a bit sorry for the aliens... This intergalactic ambassador (possibly plus retinue), instead of being taken to the world leaders, is going to be led through the complex corridors of UN administrational politics to some poor chump in the back who was too rich/connected to be kicked out but needed to look like they were doing something important or interesting to keep them happy. I bet the office is the size of a thimble...
