THE GASLAMP KILLER [First Time Atlanta Appearance]
Brainfeeder, Alpha Pup, Obey Records // Los Angeles, California
The Gaslamp Killer is a Los Angeles-based DJ whose electric style ranges from psychedelia and world music to dubstep and left-field hip-hop. Associated with Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records, he made his production debut in the late 2000s with a series of EPs. Born William Benjamin Bensussen, he originally comes from San Diego, CA, whose downtown Gaslamp District’s bar scene inspired him to name himself the Gaslamp Killer in disgust for much of the patronage. Upon relocating to Los Angeles, he found a niche for himself amid the city’s massive underground party scene and ultimately found a home for himself as a resident DJ at the club Low End Theory, which resulted in a series of club-sponsored podcasts. He also released a series of mix CDs, among them Gaslamp Killers (2007), It’s a Rocky Road (2007), I Spit on Your Grave (2008), Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting for You! (2009), and All Killer (2009), the latter a label showcase for the London-based world psychedelia imprint Finders Keepers Records. As a producer, the Gaslamp Killer made his debut in the late 2000s, releasing, for instance, a split single with Free the Robots, “The Killer Robots,” on Obey Records in 2008 and an EP, My Troubled Mind, on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records in 2009.

DAEDELUS
Ninja Tune, Mush, Plug Research // Los Angeles, California
Born Alfred Weisberg-Roberts in Santa Monica, CA, producer/instrumentalist Daedelus wanted to be an inventor from an early age, a sentiment that led to him choosing an artistic moniker (in Greek mythology, Daedalus was known as an inventor, although Weisberg-Roberts also cites the character Stephan Dedalus in James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man -- as well as the ship in the Japanese cartoon Robotech -- as equally valid reasons for his selection) when he began releasing his own work. Despite the fact that he was formally trained on double bass and bass clarinet, had studied jazz at USC, and could play additional instruments such as the guitar and accordion, Daedelus chose to go the electronica route, often incorporating samples from the '30s and '40s into his IDM and left-field hip-hop. Though Daedelus' first single appeared in 2001, it wasn't until the following year that his debut full-length, Invention, was released by the Plug Research label. Daedelus proved to be a prolific composer, and the following four years brought four new albums (released via Plug Research and Mush): 2003's Rethinking the Weather, 2004's Of Snowdonia, 2005's Exquisite Corpse, and 2006's Daedelus Denies the Day's Demise. He also worked on countless singles and side projects, including a stint as a producer for his Mush labelmates. The musician's engaging live set was finally made available for fans, albeit in limited numbers, with Live at Low End Theory, which was recorded during a July 2007 performance at Los Angeles' The Airliner, and released in early 2008. Love to Make Music To followed in July. Righteous Fists of Harmony, issued in 2010, was released on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, and flew straight to the top of every chart out there.

FREE THE ROBOTS
Alpha Pup, Vagrant Records // Los Angeles, California
Chris Alfaro is Free the Robots. The genre-defying artist pulls together heavy doses of traditional jazz, Psych, Electronic, Hip Hop, with progressive melodies and devastating drums into a rich pot of sound. His techniques create harmony between genres with the blending of obscure samples with analog and digital compositions. Based out of Santa Ana, CA, Free The Robots started as a side project by Alfaro in 2003 while also playing with different bands, producing MC’s, and DJing full time. Having worked with so many different styles of music, Free the Robots brought everything together under one roof, allowing further exploration. With the use of samples, Controllers, and other live instruments, Alfaro creates a balance between the sounds of the past, present & future. Free the Robots has reached a worldwide audience since its humble beginnings and found its place among the top artists in this genre. With the constant development of Alfaro’s sound and live show, Free the Robots Has shared the stage with the likes of Prefuse 73, Flying Lotus, the Glitch Mob, Afrika Bambaataa and more.

SAMIYAM
Brainfeeder, Hyperdub, Warp Records // Ann Arbor, Michigan
Ann Arbor’s latest prodigal son and lover of sprinkles on doughnuts, takes the legacy of all Detroit’s talented musical sons and daughters and makes Hip Hop beats filled with snippets of Soul, Funk, 70’s Italian horror flick soundtracks, Nintendo bonus level music, and 90’s Hip Hop. Somehow, with this much content, the beats still manage to sound gloriously minimal and disjointed. Fans like Benji B, Andrew Meza and XLR8R have been eagerly snapping up his tracks, as Sam freeze frames Electro energy and spits it back out as twisted future Jazz. Dabrye is a fan, Daedelus describes him as “a thrilling sound to break the sameness,” and Flying Lotus is his brother in arms (they collaborate on the project FLYamSAM).

MINDELIXIR
Abstract Logic Recordings, Daly City Records, Bass Church // Charlotte, North Carolina
Mindelixir has been a busy individual recently. His funky jazz infused blend of bass music has been categorized as dubstep often but there's something very different about this producers sound. See for yourself by checking out his new mix that just dropped for URB magazine or checking out his last release, Mindelixir Presents Music for Funerals and Banks (every single track charted on beatport's top 100 for electronica.) His monthly party is one of the largest bass parties in the country and his work with Atlanta based record label ALR has lead to record sales for every quarter since he joined the team. Watch out for his live show, there's no other place on earth to hear the futuristic bass heavy blend he's wielding.

SECTION 8
Gamma Audio, Abducted Dub, Planet Terror, Atlanta Dubstep, Abstract Logic Recordings, Household Management, http://www.myspace.com/section8audio // Atlanta, GA
Mike Waterbury, aka Section 8, fell in love with Drum & Bass in early 1999 after moving down to Atlanta from his hometown in Connticutt. Influenced by many sounds including Virus, Subtitles, Hospital, & Atlanta-based Shadow Law, his love for Liquid & Neurofunk was crystal clear in every set. After playing at numerous Drum & Bass events throughout the southeast, he soon became one of Atlanta's top locals. In one such instance he even had to fill in for a certain LTJ BUKEM, who had missed a show due to complications. Section 8 was lauded for his ability to fill in for such a legend and still be able to hold the crowd with a ridiculously spectacular set. Some say he even rivaled LTJ himself. In 2005, Section 8 took the next step & started producing Drum & Bass. Two years later, he discovered a huge attraction to Dubstep after hearing such artists as Vaccine, Vex’d, and Burial. Now primarily focused on Dubstep, he is trying to bring something new to the table with his sound. Known for his signature synths and driving basslines, Section 8 is making his name known world wide. In September of 2009, Section 8’s debut release entitled “Mercury EP” was released on Abducted Records. Only out a few days, “Boulevard” appeared in Beatport’s Top 100 for Dubstep. The rest of Autumn and into the Winter of 2009 will be a busy season for Section 8, especially after his linking up with with top producers like Killeralien, B1TCRUNCH3R, Phonetic Systems, and Mouch. With an upcoming collaboration coming out on Planet Terror, and an EP due out before winter on Gamma Audio, the near future looks very very bright for Section 8.
