Kode 9 and Space Ape in Sheffield aftermath thread
Kode 9 destroyed Sheffield last night.
He played a beautiful, lush, heavy, utterly vibe-infused set on the Valve soundsystem - this was the first time dubstep's been played on Valve and it was very good, certainly much better than the distorted mess that 190bpm heavy metal d'n'b sounded.
Julian C90 opened up and was excellent as well.
Together they turned an empty dancefloor with disinterested d'n'b heads looking on from the sidelines into a full-on dubstep rave. It was fantastic. Brought a big chunk of DMZ magic to Sheffield.

Cheers Sapphic... it was one hell of a gig.
And it's one thing to rock DMZ where everyone is already committed... it's something altogether different to turn an empty room at a d'n'b night into a wild dubstep party!

room too empty when i went on. meh- what do you expect at 9pm on a saturday i guess?
playing on valve was a privilege though. had to drop the candyfloss remix just to see how much air it'd shift
big up kode and space ape tho- started with a full-length rendition of the beatless 'sign of the dub' which wrong-footed some ravers but the set built to a wicked climax.
definitely exposed some new heads to a new sound whilst simulataneously playing to them that already know...

Glad you enjoyed the sensations Juliun - your set was smooth and sweet!

Must say big up to Kode 9 and Spaceape for their hard work too... Two shows in one night!... "Hardest working man in dubstep" as Space said at Brixton... Kode's and Space were both well good at DMZ too... Jules informs me Kode's played that mental arhythmical thing that he started with at DMZ. Mental that one. And the MF Doom thing is sick. Kode's is on it atm f'real.
It's kind of weird that I missed one of the biggest dubstep things to go down in sheffield. (And there were alot of other familiar sheffo faces down DMZ - big up each). But there was no way in the world that I was missing the birtday bash.
Bless up all the sheffo gang...

great review grievous angel. yeah kode9 was indeed brilliant (and im sorry to say i missed juliun's set cos my girlfriend was faffing around doing her make up) but sadly the drum and bass was pretty dire, spent most of the night after kode9 sitting down in the side room.. shame.
well at least kode9 lived up to his good name and delivered an amazing set and hopefully brought some new converts to the sound.

A sheffield scene is building, slowly...
Yeah, the d'n'b later that night was pretty awful!

Yeah was ace to hear Kode 9 on Valve, they could of turned it up more though! Know what you mean it was good to see a small crowd go apeshit for the dubstep, at a drum&bass night.

We just need some bigger, purely dubstep nights, that'll help the scene grow!
Respect to C90 though for doin your part, intrigued as to what you've got comin up...

At the end of the day, things aren't that bad...
In the last year and and half, we've (c90) done Vex'd, Mala & Spaceape, Pinch, Atki2 and the Werk lot, and Skepta and Jammer. And we're not even a dedicated dubstep-only night!
In addition, others have done Youngsta, Loefah, Plastician, M/A, Mark One, Kode9 and Oris Jay.
That's much better than alot of places. And anyone who's in the know about sheffo knows what this city can be like with respect to clubs.
Y'all know Skream is playing soon (April 17th?) too? I'll let you know about the forthcoming c90 offerings one day (still a few details to be sorted)...
