Hi guys,

I'm looking for suggestions for a pair of active monitors for house, dubstep, techno, looking to spend £600 tops.

Someone suggested to me, Rokit KRK RP8s, which I've found for £399 for a pair, anyone know anything about them? Anyone got any better suggestions?

I've been researching this topic for about 3 months, with a budget of around $AUD1500. It looks as though I'll be going with the JBL LSRs - 2x active 5" monitors + a 10" sub. Sound quality is very, very nice. I don't like the rokits that much. They have a great sound, but it's not accurate. I was also looking at the samson rubicons but they were a bit past my budget, although they were also rated very highly. Hope this helps

Save up and buy a pair of Yamaha NS-10M's(if you can find em) and get a decent sub. Best speakers if your looking for speakers that are very flat.

ns-10s are the worst recommendation you can give lol, granted you'll see them in studios as an accompanying comparison, but as a main monitor they are horrid, they are great for picking up the worst in you mix as they don't flatter anything. for your average home studio with minimal treatment i wouldn't want a pair

Unless you're truly a pro I wouldn't worry too much about room treatment, especially if you're looking at budget monitors...

treatment helps in any monitoring situation, from the cheapest of the cheap to the pro level monitors

I'm sorry, but you don't know the meaning of BUDGET until your main set of reference monitors are a pair of edirol MA7As.

My point is - even though it will help, I think it's a waste of time and money until your ears are ready for it. If you can't spot the difference in sound through monitors, there's no way you're going to pick up differences due to your room arrangement.

get the yamaha hs80m's off http://www.gak.co.uk for £349 or £329 if you want B stock. You wont find a flatter sounding monitor for under £500. I used to own adam a7's (before selling them to pay the rent) recently purchased the yamaha's after auditioning them in GAK itself in brighton and i gotta say, i think i prefer the sound of the yams. Then again you could just save up an extra 300 odd quid and get the adam a7x, which btw .... is nuts. You can get the a7x's for £715 off ebay with free delivery. Dont get the adam a8x's they have problems with random buzzing. But if you're on a budget .... Yamaha hs80m hands down!

thats is not true at all, its much more likely you wont be spotting the difference in sound on monitors BECAUSE your room acoustics are off. if you can at all afford it even minor treatment on the direct sides and above your listening postion it will help your mixes alot.

i say look at the event 20/20s. plenty reviews but them ahead of the krks. (im sure the reverse is true as well though lol) but seriously dont sleep on these under appreciated monitors.

I have a pair of BX8a's. Cost me around Aus $800. I haven't really heard much else, but I like em.

Please explain what you mean by buzzing? also, personal experience - or just hear-say? i'm legitimately curious, i was looking into buying these this month... the a8x's that is. or SH 80's. I know the a8x's have a much better higher frequency response.... but is it truly "better?" and by that i mean is it more accurate. crispy trebs are nice, but not if its not flat lining the frequency response - i dont want boosts.

hell no hell no hell no. get SH 80s if you wanna go yamaha imo... although any true engineer will tell you go to the freaking place & listen to them. ask before purchasing if you can take them back if they dont sound right in your room. theyll likely do it because if not they figure you'll go elsewhere because a lot of places do. your ears are the only thing you should listen to

and why the hell not? 50% of what you're hearing is affected by the room you're in... the other 50 obviously being the speakers you're hearing it out of. that's a large percentage if you ask me...

now im not saying go out and buy some 300 dollar bass traps.. but i do definitely suggest going out and buying 50 bucks worth of matereal and build three of them yourself. finish it off with a nice cheap ass fabric. it's actually very easy. & they look damn nice - you'll be very very surprised if you end up doing it at the result - i promise you that.
