Post by k13 » Tue Mar 13, 2007 11:55 pm

i dont know how to produce a good high hat. what features do you use to produce warm high hats ?

and with the snare...how do you make that distorted crunch snare at the start ?

one way is to asdr envelope each snare using layered versions
ie attack of one snare sustain of another
in otherwords besides layering snares or hits its blending versions together like using snap from one and reverb from another

hats i layer sometimes as well other times i snag em out of funk breaks and eq and tweak em, hell same goes for snares at times (damn dnb production always being in front of my mind)
but the 909 handclaps are one of my fav hits to layer to get some of those crispy snares too 8)

edit: oh yeah and for that distortion try sending your snare to a bus or secondary fx channel and use a tube distortion unit or saturation and mix em together to desired effect
you could even use like a guitar amp distortion vst like guitar rig or izotope trash just key to know to use sends to maintain orig sound on top of fx
what soft are you using to sequence?

i dunno i find kontakt to be buggy with fruity at times but you can do pretty much same shit with rex files and fruity slicer and routing in mixer

well in your case seems to be flstudio or progs like reason cubase logic
or tracker route which is diff to sequencing like renoise

i use fl mainly. i got cubase but not mastered it like reason and fl.

and i prefer hooking everything up to fl. cos its easier.

i have amassed a large collection of drum hits over time (DOA sample swap FTW!) and i tend to find one or two snares that i really like and layer them. I then run a series of distortions through a send track and run the snares through that. with hats, i just make weird loops of random percussion at 140bpm in reaktor or reason and save the loops. I then have a collection of different loops i can mess with whenever i want to... i chop em up, reverse em, or whatever i want to get a desired effect.

hope some of this helps.

well i hope the techniques i listed are good enough man they're pretty much applicable regardless of sequencer if you have any questions about what i mean or i'm being too technical lemme know and i'll try to break it down a bit

If you scroll right in the mixer you'll see the channels FX1 FX2 FX3 and FX4. Those are send channels. You can put effects in there like reverb, and then in your other channels send signal to the send channels to apply reverb, rather than running 4 or 5 instances of a reverb or delay plug.

Try 'keychaining/sidechaining/the shamen effect'* (using gates to trigger sounds from original source) or playing with white noise-as a short sample length.
You could also use two snares one with reverb and one dry for extra punch!
need a decent reverb unit though. Go to demonid to get the ik multimedia reverb pack for amazing au's. Hope this helps.

For hihats use some comp and PSPvintage warmer.Thats all i do, but then again my original samples are unbelievable anyway. I dont know what your sound like.
*I haven't used FL since school....i presume its not just logic you can do this on.Tis a fine technique to use to add 'exitment' to your drum/basss/pad hits.
