+1 for span, and here's a great one that will let you analyze multiple sources at once:

I personally like this freeware VST, I like how it's re-sizable and easy to read.

I was going to say SPAN, but depending on your DAW you can also just use the built-in ones and they're fine :) I use Cubase and the MultiScope VSTe does pretty much what I want :) Logic's track EQ has one built-in and I'm sure Pro Tools and Ableton would have one knocking about somewhere :)

I have used Cool Edit Pro 2.0's for over 10 years now :o - and have yet to see one I like better, payware or otherwise. Call me curmudgeonly.

However since I'm not planning on upgrading to Audition I've been searching around for a decent Spectrum and Frequency analysis tool, and surprisingly, have really been warming up to ReaFir lately. It's good stuff and can do more than analysis too...
ReaFIR is a EQ and dynamics plug-in that includes an FFT spectrum analysis window. Amongst other things it can be used as a precision EQ, a gate, a fast attack/release precision compressor, a noise reduction tool.
The combination of analysis and EQ in the same view is pretty cool for slapping onto the end of the master bus signal chain for fine control over things that aren't quite right and not possible to fix in the individual channel EQ's.
