I can't believe I've been producing for years without a sub!
So I just hooked up beefy old hi-fi speaker and set up a crossover on my DAW and fuck me is it easier to hear what's going on.
Getting the sub levels right has always been a bit tricky for me and now I know why, no more second guessing with VUs.
If you've only got a little pair of nearfields then I would now consider it essential, I don't know why it doesn't come up more?

because an improperly setup sub can cause a shit ton of problems in the mix and monitoring situations

what's 'improperly set up'?
at the moment im feeling that hearing a coloured version of my very bottom end is better than not hearing it at all
as with everything i knew there'd be issues though...

Thats true, but you bought monitors to get a flat sound, and that sub isn't going to be in line with the rest of your sound. Subs are also very effected by the room around them, so people usually reccomend room treatment. However I agree with you that some sub is better than none
Re: I can't believe I've been producing for years without a
pshhhhh my sub is not properly set up in fact its jsut from a set of logitec speakers, I use it mainly for reference to see if shit is wokring down there. for the most part I just watch the levels and it works pretty well.
PS i think a lot of people over-shink sub, its just a sine wave, not that hard to figure out.

I have made some screwed up mixdowns with sub attached so I usually refrain. I have a sub attached to my dj set up I can use to reference but mixdown time no. Whatever works tho!
Re: I can't believe I've been producing for years without a
I use a sub in an untreated room and I don't think my mixdowns are too shabby you just need to know what your doing, although acoustic treatment is next on the list well maybe after an alesis andromeda.

I've got a shitty £40 Logitech 5.1 setup and although it's hardly ideal, my ears have just learnt the nuances of the speakers
That, and the sub isn't half bad either :3

cool story, no, i think it doesnt come up more cause its essential.sully.harmitage wrote:I don't know why it doesn't come up more?
everybody in dubstep should have a sub, otherwise its no dubstep remember, its midrange!
the quote goes somthing like this: "cant put a man in a room without a sub" (mala).
and you other guys, logitech, cmon?

I think it's better to be able to hear the sub even if the room isn't set up properly. At least then you can get used to the weird set up.

well a lot of people seem to be of the "it'll unflatted your signal" opinion so a LOT of people don't use a sub for monitoring.logic pro wrote:cool story, no, i think it doesnt come up more cause its essential.sully.harmitage wrote:I don't know why it doesn't come up more?

for me the extra scope far outweighs the colouring issue. and i think most speakers can't be 'learnt' even logitechs if it's not your main ref.
the proof of the pudding will be next time i visit the mastering house though!

Meh - I don't bother, if anything having my sub on makes me over compensate in other places and the subs generally to low in the mix when I play it out on a big system...
I'd just use a sub for reference and look at a freq-analyser to see if its peaking in the right places/look for any bleed.

i want a sub
i mix on my 6" monitor.. at first i always overcompensated and mixed the subbass too loud because i wasnt hearing it but i learned my setup. i can see it going the other way if you have a subwoofer. its def not neccessary for mixing. referencing yes, mixing not so much.

I just use my headphones and compare the amount of sub to other tracks that I know are sub heavy...Switched by Mindflow is a good one. It works pretty well. I don't mix on my speakers (hi-fi) because I'll put my headphones on and it'll sound too bassy. Although my headphones are just simple Sony mdr-v150's.. they produce a great bass and the sound is being delivered right to my ears, which is better than any untreated room.

I work with both my 5.1 set up and my Hi-Fi speakers in an untreated room so I can get a general idea what sort of level I should have the sub at all through it. Common problem with headphones is I have to strain myself to hear it once I have worked on the other set ups.
As annoying as it becomes, the sub is still very important mate.

I mix on my logitech's and they come with a pretty decent sub - I know it's bad practice, but I just tend to use other tracks as a reference to get the right balance for the speakers and also use freq analyst to check nothings doing what it shouldn't - this isn't a matter of choice really though - more of a don't have the money for a decent set of monitoring speakers!

Logitechs are alright! I'm a freaking student, £300 speakers aren't really on my must-have list til I actually have a job
