So I've recently begun making the switch from Reason to Ableton (which I must say suits my workflow sooo much better), and I'm really digging it. Just been recording more raw audio from reason into Ableton and throwing effects on once it's in there for the most part.

Anywho I really want to get my guitar recording in there so I can get ideas down faster. Right now I can run it into my brother's protools mixer and the signal will pass through, but what would I need to get it going independant of that? I'm sure this sounds pretty stupid, but I just don't know exactly how it all works.

What he said. I use my lexicon external soundcard the now, really love incorporating any instruments I have to my tracks.
Gives it more feeling, makes it your own if that makes sense.

You want to use an interface of some sort to route raw audio of any sort into a DAW. If you're using an electric guitar you can plug 1/4" direct, then choose the corresponding interface input for "audio from" on your ableton audio track. If you're using an acoustic guitar you can substitute the 1/4" for a Microphone line of your choice. You can also use other audio devices in this way(i.e. synths, samplers & sequencers).

I also find fewer latency issues if you route the channel through an external audio effect device rather than directly through the audio track
