Beats in 3/4 time

Post by jyro » Thu Nov 04, 2010 11:14 pm

I'm trying to mash up a 3/4 (hopefully thats the correct term) with a 4/4 meodly, so it's giving a sort of pendulum effect, with everything coming in and out of time.

I'v a bit of writers block with the 3/4 beat so has anyone got any examples of dubstep tunes that are in 3/4?
Cheers

The tune in my sig is 3/4 but its not dub, but maybe the beat may give you some ideas. Time signature changes are a real bitch to work with though, so good luck.

I can't think of anything.
I'm trying to imagine something in my head, and it's coming out very waltz-steppy. Heh.

I think you might find it easier if you try to write as 6/8 over 4/4. Not much of a difference but take that last track as an example. You should be able to find a "123 456" beat in there, as well as a "1 2 3 4", counting the beats faster makes it easier for some reason. If the track is in 6/8 the "1 2 3 4" will be a dotted crotchet rhythm in that time signature, so "123 456" becomes "123456". I have a feeling that will be more confusing than it is helpful, but tap your foot along to the last song on 1 2 3 4 and count 123456 out loud, you should hear it.

Then, in your DAW, write in 4/4 but for the 6/8 parts switch to a triplet grid. 1/4T or 1/4triplets will give you a 6/8 grid to compose on, while your standard grid will give you 4/4. That seems to be the easiest way, easier than composing in 6/8.

I hope that makes sense. Laters
