Yeeeaaahhh!!! Reel to reel is the shit!

Recording piano onto tape sounds so freakin cool it nearly reduced me to a gibbering wreck.

Yeeeaaahhh!!! Reel to reel is the shit!

Recording reversed pianos onto tape at hot levels sounds so freakin cool it nearly reduced me to a gibbering wreck.

are all reel to reels expensive? ebay has em priced pretty high in my opinion. Also what makes them so dope is it their age and the tape your recording on to + plus the fact that u can cut the tape/mess with the speeds, or is there more to it than that. Please enlighten me as I am considering trying to get a cheap one. Trying to get off the computer and record more shit outside of my lappy.

It depends what kind of tape machine you want, the kind in the photo above are more portable, have less in the way of recordable tracks and generally are easier to spool tape through than 'trolley' housed dedicated machines which tend to stay in a studio and not move, if only because they were generally patched to a desk, and fairly heavy to lift.
Ebay is expensive for second hand reel to reel machines, they were throwing them away in the mid 90's.
Check local papers, exchange and mart, that kind of thing.
I bought my Studer B62 for about 180 quid in 2000 from exchange and mart from some geezer in Dollis Hill, thing is it needs servicing now by a professional engineer, which will cost about a grand.

Best makes to look out for are Revox, Studer, Fostex are alright and the more expensive TEAC and Akai models are good as well.

Or you could always keep an eye out for real 'vintage' machines like the old EMI BBC models that sometimes come up on Ebay. Be warned though they're built like tanks and weigh a ton!
