How many tracks should I have for a demo?

any of you signed people have any advice on sending demos out and how many songs you should have to show?

varies by label and format
if it's a cd 4-6
aim or email 2-3
that's gen how i gauge it at least
if they wanna hear more they'll let you know
hell i usually just send one tune at a time anyways unless it's a cd

Depends on the tracks themselves, if you've made a series of tunes that you want to release together send them like so. If you've made a single banger send it on it's own.

I only put forward my best 3 tracks Maximum. Both online or CD.
Labels dont have the time of day to listen to every single submission they get, so only put your very best work down. They arent going to want to skim thru 6 tracks, but they might listen to all of the 3. Get me? Get me tho?
If these are great tracks, It wil keep them hungry and contact you for more. Thats the first step, getting the contact and connection from label to your music. Its vital.
If they dont respond, give them time, like a month. if still no reply, simply send them another email. Speaking from personal experience.

It's gonna take me forever till I get to the stage of having a demo to send out. I need to have songs first, and still to a single genre for a while.

I remember a while back someone saying 3 (2 similar, 1 different), but I think 2 might be more to the point

Coming from a visual effects background, if you can't wow anyone in the first 30 seconds, you may be at a disadvantage. Punch them in the face with your best stuff, quickly. It may even be to your advantage to just unload your stuff AS a demo. Meaning if your tracks have a long intro (nothing wrong with this, but these guys are on the clock and short on time), cut the intro and get into the meat of the track. This is just my experience and thoughts, I could be crazy. Might be drunk too. I have 3 cats and live alone, you decide.

From my experience, i would recommend you just keep making music and don't bother sending out demos. There's no need to rush these things! Eventually you will get approached by the right people and that way your music will find a more suitable home!

Here is the answer... for me at least... I like to have links to what you think your best stuff is and then send a link to your soundcloud. It's getting to the point where it's not even worth downloading stuff. If I listen on the soundcloud and it's dope then I'll ask for the ones I like in hi-res. I would say still send a couple 320's because not all labels are the same. And send it to the official label email. I usually get around to listening to those. Get me else where and likely I'll forget about it.

I would say this is spot in and slightly wrong at the same time..
It depends what label you're sending it to. If you're sending it to a very open minded label who puts out a range of styles and vibes - then yeah 2 what work together and 3rd being different is good.
On the flipside - if you send 2 really deep, melodic tunes to a label who specialize in that stuff, then throw a straight up dancefloor banger their way , it'll not make much sense and be a silly move.
Plan your demos just as much as you've planned your tracks from start > finish.
I also kinda agree to an extent about cutting down intros.. but in the same breath if you have a long intro and its not entertaining to listen to from start to finish - why is it so long?
