I did a speech last year on Kode9 I think, and talked about the roots of dubstep and what not. This documentary was helpful as a source

is it just about the history of it or one particular aspect, like how it grew through internet etc?

Seems like a pretty stupid thing to do a speech on, entirely based on what it's for though.

Dubstep was a music genre that flourished in the first decade of the twenty first century. Due to extensive corruption from various sources and angles it was forced to evolve into a plethora of new related underground genres around the year 2011. The end.

haha, we're basicly saying the same though (however you might not agree on that). Also agree that 2009 would have been a better choice of years but 2010/11 sounded so much cooler.
Again, forgive my sarcasm but some dubious shit going on in another thread (I needn't tell you what one) had made me a little cynical. Big new forward things coming in 2011, that's for sure though. I'm not so sure I would still call it dubstep though

. But what the fuck is a name anyway

its way too early to start writing about dubstep. we need another decade's perspective to get it right. you should definitely read through all of these

What an academic approach to music, without trying to sound too much like an elitist bastard, I think it is about this time that things begin to take a turn for the worse. (Then again, I would have to simply negate the past/current 3 years of US shows and their respective line-ups to believe that.)
I just came across a rather interesting article that--for reasons I just alluded to--may appeal to you in which it extended to its audience the type of trite empty rhetoric that you would expect from whatever the Arts equivalent may be to Peer reviewed journals found within the Sciences. In which it states the following archetypal phrases to begin any vacuous discourse:
A close consideration of the events which occurred in ____ during the ____ demonstrate that ____ had entered into a phase of widespread cultural, social, and <del>economic</del> INSERT: musical change that would define ____ for decades to come."
There are so many more topics in which to give focus to and justly exhibit zeal towards; Dubstep, for all its charm and allure, however, fails to do so in every respect. Do what you want, but I'd fail you if I was an instructor for lack of substance when you begin to give your dissertation on Womp & Wobble: The samples that changed Brostep forever.

Thing is, it would be very hard to write an academic paper about dubstep.
How many primary sources are there? And how many of those are written?
You're basing a lot of your knowledge (about history, origins) on people's witness accounts and personal opinions. To objectively reach conclusions about the origins and evolutionary tree of dubstep will be very hard indeed. The internet is one large thing working in your favour as release dates, radio shows etc. are all very accessible. A few documentary's have also been made, but again are hard to transfer into a literary work.
Also, music unfortunately is still more than science. Like arts, it can not be defined by one singular definition. I think it would be really hard to write a dissertation or a thesis or any sort of well founded academic work regarding dubstep.

Neuroscience has a good crack at it, Dan Levetin's literature output is easily accessible and on top of being a neuroscientist he's also a world-famous record producer
