No need to have a vs. Both programs will work fine together.

True dat.
I use both mate and they are both excellent programs. Reason rewired into Ableton is fully beast.

The benefits with reason to me are I love the workflow and the interface and the routing possibilities are pretty tight. There are 3 basic synths supplied with reason and a couple of samplers but the real beauty of it is when you use a thing called the 'Combinator' which allows you to combine as many synths/effects etc as you like into one instrument and even route things from one synth into another etc. Basically it's a really interesting and refreshing way to work and can lead to some pretty interesting stuff. It doesn't sound great after 15 seconds and barely any tweaking like synths like circle/massive do but you'll learn a lot about synthesis using it and if you get to know your way around it you can make some BIG sounds.
Examples of things made with reason are most of Widdlers back catalogue (froggy style especially tickles me), quite a bit of prodigy stuff (post the fat of the land) and I think a few DMZ types (Is it right that Mala and Coki use it??) use/used it too along with Stenchman, Funtcase etc etc so listen to some of those artists for an idea of what can be done with it :p

I used Reason for years and then I tried Ableton and now I don't use Reason anymore. End of story. I don't even like using Reason rewired now.

I have dibble dabbled in ableton a little bit but Ill never give up reason. I love its work flow and I know how to use it like the back of my hand. The latest dubstep tune I did with nothing but reason 4.0 is the top track at
www.Soundclick.com/Auditory (song plays automatically)

maybe someone can point me in the right direction than... I'm trying to rewire reason to ableton as we speak, however...in the "audio to" field in my i/o panel, Reason does not show up. Is there somewhere in my preferences that I can adjust that?

I might be forced to switch to Reason software for college next semester.
Post up what you use and how you feel about it.
If you know both programs well, here is your time to shine.
reason works great with any daw really but why does your college force you to switch? the college I did on sound engineering taught me all DAW's, if your college forces you to switch I reckon ur on the wrong college

Reminds me of when I was at college for music production and we used cubase for 1st year and reason for 2nd.
It felt like a proper downgrade.

Reason is the most powerful music production software i have ever used. it's a wolf in sheep clothing, on the surface it's just some decent samplers, synths, and effects but it's how all the devices interact together that make it special. it's one giant modular synth and sampling machine that can go as deep as your imagination. on the downside it's not so good for mixdowns, i always rewire into Pro Tools because the Reason EQ's are not very nice to use.
Ableton is just a DAW with a fancy way to get song structures down. it makes you think in loops and i don't think that's a good thing.

Reason is awesome..don't let its "fisher price" look fool you..this is not a toy,I made some sick things that I would never have made in logic because of all the freedom and creativity reason brings you

I just dropped some tunes into the dubs forum that came out of reason, if u wanna take a listen. It's what I know so I use it...I'll echo the remark, though, that mixing outside of reason may help to avoid headaches (and ear fatigue)..
I like the idea of everything being contained in one suite of software as opposed to relying on vst plugins...plus the synths in reason are plenty versatile, and half the fun is making your own sounds.

Reason rewired into ableton is definitley useful.. but now it seems rather pointless when I can use better VSTs and whatnot.

I used to think that too until someone pointed out to me you can just ignore the whole loop thing and use it exactly like a normal DAW if you wish. I've made a lot of songs in ableton and not one of them has used it's shitty loops feature.

From what I've heard the loops function is pretty similar to FL's clips which are by no means shitty, it's a great little feature which isn't part of many of the 'bigger' DAWs you just need to make sure you don't get stuck in the loop stage. On a slightly related note I didn't like Reason at all and I've just downloaded Live demo version to see what it's all about (not gonna lie, somebody said it's the grownup FL)

by step correct
Seriously no need to rewire unless you are going to be using VSTs and effects via Ableton. If you learn your levels in reason IMO you are better off bouncing loops and stems and then arranging in Cubase or ableton or whatever suits you. I dunno, when I rewire and try to make a tune that way I tend to get a little heavy handed on automation and such in both programs and noticed my tunes sound more concrete and solid bouncing them and then using VST effects and such on the loops I make. To each their own though
