The dubstep elitist understands....

Post by snypadub » Wed Dec 01, 2010 1:34 am

I tried to produce a tune myself. Literaly no experience in production whatsoever, just spent a day playing with the software and trying to make a sound and this piece of crap is what I came out with:

Soundcloud
I understand how difficult it is now to produce music, even the shitty midrange crap that I hate takes bare effort so I will low the slagging off as it aint fair to someone who has put that much effort into making a beat.
All the same my opinion hasn't changed I still hate midrange music and prefer sublow (i know my track doesn't back me up here as it is just midrange really but oh well)

any advice on how to get my head around producing would be much appreciated. Gunna spend the weekend reading the production bible.

Good for a first attempt. my first attempt sounded like nero took painkillers and drank a 26 at the same time and tried to rush a song in 20 mins, took me 3 days lol.

It's not that bad man. I'm glad you made the attempt at least....I HATE it when non-musicians criticize producers in a negative way because they have no idea the amount of time that goes into making a 3-4 minute long track. Keep up the beats and you'll only get better with experience. :Q:

Lol I literally installed a copy of fl from my brother and spent a day playin with the preset packs and sytrus
I know a bit about a mixing desk so I worked out how to load tracks tot hat and tweak um with compression eq and reverb but beyond that my knoiwledge is extremely limited.

Im actually from Leicester but my gf lives honiton and haven't gone back to leicester in years so we flit btwn devon and bristol.
She has an unusual circle of friends but name a few people and i'll tell you if we know um.

As for the track; I don't think I have enough time in my life to produce but I might dedicate a few hours a week to reading through the production bible and producing sounds based on its advice.
Who knows maybe someday I will come up with something resembling good music. Will stick to djing for now though.

@ snypa: Best step from here is to keep working on your modulations. Forget about trying to achieve the low end for the time being, and working on making the twisty basses you want. Once you think you've got the modulation side down (it's easier to learn with the mid-rangy stuff - because it's easier to hear) then start working to make the bass ever lower and lower. You are going to want to saturate the hell out of your subs and basses to get the sound you want (there are people here who disagree with me on this, but F@#$ it, in my experience this is the only real way). You are going to need to low pass your results (preferably with modulation on the cutoff for low bass sounds or volume modulation for purer subs). Also, too much verb on the drums, but better drums come with practice, not advice.

p.s.: nice try for your first one. Keep at it... even if just to get a grasp on what goes in to making a tune. You don't have to be a chef to decide if their food tastes good, but it helps to cook once in a while if you want to understand what takes to be a great chef. ;-)
