I disagree, the music genre is the music on it's own, the scene is everything related to the genre. A scene can be from a certain country, city or district, such as the Bristol dubstep scene.

I know what you mean. Nowadays there's an enormous gap between modern dubstep and the original dubstep. Most of the people listening to mainstream dubstep probably haven't even heard of DMZ.
