I'm running an 03 tacoma with the standard factory radio and speakers with +4 to the bass and I think +3 to the mids/high

Sounded like complete shit. Waaaay to much bass/mud and I couldn't really hear too much of my mids.

Would monitors or a decent pair of phones fix this?

I'm also thinking I should probably A/B my tunes (Which I haven't)

That's what used to happen to me when I played my tunes in the car, working on hi-fi speakers really damages your mixdowns. Even now my mixdowns aren't great still though and sometimes still get the same problem your describing :\ sad times. Only way round it is lots of practice.

It will aid, but not fix it

I always listen to my tune in cars, headphones, monitors and basically every different system I can during mixdown. If I can get it sounding nice on all these I know its a decent mix

This. Your car system will ALWAYS expose your mixdown needs. I constantly reference tunes back and forth between my studio and car...

Yeah. Once I finish the basic structure of a track and get to really pressing on the mixdown, as soon as i start thinking the mix is sounding good/ close to "finished" i find an excuse to hop on the highway and turn that shit up. Always exposes soooo much for me. Just gotta make a mental note, and try and try again.

yea i tend to bounce between different pairs of cans and speakers during mixing all part of getting a solid reference on your monitoring setup

high pass filter almost everything besides sub bass. search for how to EQ and/or sidechain your bass and kick to gel together

wooo, just really started getting the hang of this and it is sooooo important. a little massage with the eq works Wonders. try lowpassing the whole mix at 100hz and go to work. culprate mentioned that in an interview and its so simple but damn close to genius for getting your subs and kick flawless.

netrik your mixdowns are super crisp no doubt. ive been lazy about listening in the car, need to get on it

Here's the freq analyst thing of the current track I'm working on. I've picked up a few points from the eq tutorial floating around here and I think my gain structure is pretty good. Have a look see

Rook, the Analyser your using isnt very accurate in the bass. Try something with a higher FFT setting. I can recommend Vexengo's Span. (goto its settings and change the fft amount) Its also free.

But from the picture, To me it looks like you have a dent in your mids.

rule of thumb is, if it sounds good on ns-10... it sounds good everywhere

True man. I have been using span too and it seems to work better than bluecat but eats up some resources (at least for me)

Been running back and fourth and starting to get some results lol.

My question is...

When your looking at the freq graph, you want to see a pretty straight line instead of line slopes or dips?
