basically ive got a bit of cash to spend on an apple. im looking to spend £850 TOPS . so do i go for the 64gb macbook air? or do i go with the 250gb macbook? im only gonna be using it for logic 9 (express) and general browsing, any suggestions? am i gonna need the extra space /that/ much (im starting to produce alot more these days) what you think? any advice appreciated.

and also, if you can scrape together any more money i would. itll be worth it in the long run you got to bear in mind most things in a laptop cant be upgraded. and having 850 quid unfortunately isnt that much when i comes to anything with an apple sticker on it

Get the second macbook pro 13 inch with the faster processor. And expand your RAM to 8GB.
Just do it yourself cuz they charge you a hell of a lot more for it at your apple store.

8gb of ram is over kill.. IMO I really don't see it being worth the cash if you're just going to use it for production/dj.

I'd get a Macbook and upgrade the HD and RAM.. HD through mac and RAM from newegg or something

The 13" has a 4GB standard, so i suppose you're good with that for a while, but especially when you're going to record stuff, extra RAM could come in handy. I'd really go for a macbook pro though. Save up for a 13".

Ive got the unibody aluminum macbook (Looks like the pro but isnt) 13 inch 2Ghz 2GB, if you are producing using a lot of plugins, it will crash endlessly, also apple put the slow 5400 rpm HDs in and not the 7200rpm ones which are much better for production. Save up for a macbook pro, or like said above get a second hand one.

Look for the refurbished ones on the apple webstore. I found an iMac that was 350 off the original price. Didn't have the cash for it, but it would be pretty sweet!

I have a 13" MacBook Pro unibody with 2GB RAM and the 160GB HD which works just fine.....I've had Logic open and running tons of plugs, and just earlier today I was running Logic and Pro Tools and it didn't crash....I've never had any problems with it. But I'm getting 8GB RAM for Christmas which makes me very happy. But I would definitely save up and get the MBP.

Man, I'm running a standard mac book over 2 years old now (a black one, a couple of months before they upgraded and stopped the black colour scheme) and it's got 2gb RAM and 2.4 GHz processing dual core and it works (mostly) fine for production - multiple instances of sculpture, massive or kontakt, it usually works (give or take the old system overload).

Hell nothing a bit of resampling/freezing doesn't solve.

Airs aren't ready for that type of computing. Their claim to fame is being super thin, that's about it.

Honestly don't see the point in buying a mac unless you have enough money to get a mac pro (not a mac book pro)

whatever u do, don't get the air. too much of a head ache. especially the new ones... they don't even have a cd/dvd player!
and make sure u get some sort of warranty, too, i know ppl who have had their macbooks completely die out on them after a year or so...

I've never heard of one randomly dying.. but one of my friends had a old Macbook.. the model before the 08s and spilled a little bit of water on the keyboard.. and that was the end of it.. he had a warranty.. called apple and sent him a new MBP because it was the computer that had the same price as his when he bought his. So basically by messing up his computer he got a better one.. get a warranty!

..he even told them that he spilled water on it, and I guess it was still covered!

Id say that a macbook would suit you just fine. I would definitely go for the new product though. I know it is out of your price range now (but you can do this any time within the first year of ownership of the computer) but you should also look into getting the Applecare Protection Plan on your new mac when you get it http://store.apple.com/uk/product/APPLE ... Purchasing it new starts your warranty fresh, and makes sure that if you need to call up Apple because of anything wrong with the computer (or need a hardware repair or something) it would enable you to do that without having to pay loads and loads out of pocket. That applecare will run you about 199 quid, but I promise you brother, its much better to have it than to be sorry later when your expensive macbook needs to be repaired for some reason or another. For example, in the US it costs about $300 to get just the optical drive replaced if you are out of warranty (could be done by yourself, but possibly voiding your warranty, and possibly messing up the computer, is that a risk your willing to take on such an expensive piece of equipment?) I've been using Apple for quite a few years now, and this is just my take on the situation Good luck with your new purchase!
