warnin- people ripping myspace audio and sharing on soulseek

Post by luke.envoy » Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:03 am

edit: spoke to dstepz and file is deleted

anyways, some people been sharing tunes ripped from the myspace stream, and distributing it on soulseek.

the streams are there so people can hear the tunes being promoted on that site, not so they can put it on their ipod or itunes

this sort of thing is inevitable, but it doesnt mean that we should let people get away with it

bassically i suggest u dont upload too good quality mp3s (trouble is it doesnt give such an accurite representation of your sound then) and it might be a good idea to not include whole tracks but have them fade out

i encoded it at 96kbps, then myspace encodes it again at 96, so its poor enough

i faded the tune in and out, so its not complete

this was going to happen eventually. i think it's really important that we learn big lessons from the dnb world. if you give people an inch, most people take a mile. :(
i'd say start watermarking anything you put on myspace. for example: start adding wierd samples in the mp3, that won't be on the main release. loads of people are doing this in dnb, and as this small scene get's bigger, it's going to be harder and harder to police the rippers and soulseekers.

you have to be proactive, rather than reactive. you can't stop filesharing, but you can make it really frustrating for those that take advantage.

yeah no doubt i see what your saying, that just aint on, but im saying if the download is pretty shite quality and fades both in and out pretty quickly why is anyone even gonna bother trying to press it dub anyway?

i doubt someone would try and press it up, but you can bet that there are a few upcoming dubstep dj's that are thinking.....hmmm, no one in my city knows that this tune isn't out yet, so i might as well play it out as a rip.

I have had this back in the days of dubplate.net someone ripped my Hybrid Seizure tune and looped it for 5 minutes.

Personally I feel aslong as the audio inst good enough quality to play out, cut, press up etc Im cool with it. As someone who downloads all their stuff from Soul Seek doesnt buy records or CDs anway so them having the tune isnt going to stop them buying the tune as they already have it.

So basically if it isnt high enough quality to play out, cut, press up noone can make money from your tune and at the end of the day if its on Soul Seek its going to get around and that means good promotion for yourself.

But still its annoying as hell to know people have the cheek to rob your myspace. Maybe you could include a vox saying" Yo this 1 a myspace special if you have downloaded this from Soul Seek then expect some heavies to be knocking on your door in the next 24 hours to MERK you deifferently, get me, innit star, mans dem inna korna, standard, oozie, shotgun style"

I think your right saying this is always gonna happen, but if its a user from this board they should know better.. All the producers are slaving away making tracks for someone to put on soulseek.. av a word dstepz!!

Ripping it for yourself is one thing, sharing it to the world is another... some people ain't concerned about the quality and will have rinsed the tune on their i pod or whatever so many times it will probably mean they won't rush out to buy it when it gets released...

This has also happened with some tracks of my tracks i put up on my site. If the guilty people doing this think that there helping to spread the sound by sharing other peoples tunes on soulseek your wrong.. instead of ripping tunes spend the time browsing the online shops for tunes, add to cart and part with some ££, like the rest of us, that's the support the scene needs right now..

Oh and getting your arse down to london this weekend for a 3 day mash up... see ya there soldiers
