Sampling

So theres alot of talk on the forum at the moment about copyright and sampling. Heres my question.

Is there a way to sample an artist while just keeping a certain element of the song? i.e. Say i wanted to have someones vocals in one of my songs without say Drums or bass, Is this possible? I imagine if this is possible it is done on software like pro-tools or soundforge right?

The reason I ask is I see people remixing tracks that have like only just been released and yeah maybe they have the stems but its quite unbelievable that a big artist would give stems to a complete unknown. I dunno maybe they just asked.

You can get vocal isolating plugins but they always sound really tinny and metallic.
I personally don't bother with the 'ol youtube.com/dubstepremix.balls thing myself but I imagine people just eq as much as they can out and just slap some well noisy bass over the top and hope people won't notice.

I'm sure if you are a good enough producer and well known within the industry you could get stems for big tracks, but that would be a commercial release anyway.

Although sometimes stems reach into the pirate sphere, a mate of mine found the stems for a lady gaga track on piratetorrentnet.steal recently.
(It was actually a real eye opener into just how simple and piss weak pop music is. Nicely mixed, but just as bland as the sum of its parts.)
