California tables bill to ban Raves.

I saw this announced on Synthtopia today and it broke my heart...is the motherland of the West Coast sound really trying to kill one of its best artistic achievements?

http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2010/ ... alifornia/

I'm not from Cali but I was moved to send an email as a concerned member of the generation being targeted by this bill.

The bill was put forth by Fiona Ma and her website and contact info are here: http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/members/a12/

Feel free to voice any concerns that you may have about this drastic/sweeping/unfair proposal.

I'm up in Canada and lately we've had a lot of trouble with police shutting parties down. Further West, Calgary has had some major badman parties cut short over bull shit reasons fabricated by the Police (even after the Fire Chief said the party was fine/not over capacity).

It's important to let the out of touch politicians know how important this new music is to us, and how they should just as well try banning rock concerts and other live musical performances (and they DID want to ban rock and roll back in the day).

EDIT: HA! It seems Fiona Ma will be throwing the dopest of NYE parties this year....clearly violating her own proposal.

Thanks for your time,

No Canada, no whine.

No Pittsburgh, no whine.

Define pre-recorded? I dj. Live. The beat matching and shit... doesnt that null it out?
What about hiphop? Snoop, major, aminstream artist right, plays shows to mainstream crowds with mainstrem security, but bet any money, he doesnt have a live band playing his instrumentals, hes go someone manning Ableton, or a DJ, or w/e. Does this outlaw those sort of events as well?
Does that mean, if I have an MC, Im cool?
What about residency DJs at night clubs? Do people who own steady dance clubs that are well maintained and well respected have to fire thier DJs and hire an in house band??? Wont this effect local buisnesses severely?
Does that mean, as long as we're in a club, we can still throw parties?
Can I still throw a rave if I run hardware and kaoss pads? Is beardyman raving? hes not pre recorded...

Too many holes in that.

Fucks sake with this definition, itd technically be illegal to play rerun the film 'Help' or 'Rockers' more then once a night in theatres.

I suppose this is the reactionary result of those deaths at big outdoor dance events in California over the past couple of months. :(

“If electronic music is criminalized, our government will succeed in alienating a generation of Californians and simply drive dance parties underground — a less regulated, less safe, less sane situation than we have today,”
Basically this

that is just going to vilify the cause

I'm from California, and have been looking into this...

Apparently, it doesn't affect places with licenses to have bars, throw concerts, stuff like that. So EDC would be unaffected. If I read it correctly, it's banning underground shit and anything in state sponsored venues.

I think.

Either way, it isn't going to pass, at least not in this form, because of all its holes.

Hopefully
at first I thought, well if decriminalized weed wouldnt pass, this might not pass
but then I thought, if people who voted against that voted for this, might fuck shit up

Worst case scenario, it passes, raving goes back underground. Shucks.

I'm jealous that they're even cracking down on raves.. Here in ohio we're lucky to have any rave at all lol. But, this is fucked.. Someone should contact some major artists from California and get protests started?

Im surprised considering that the state of california is so broke atm, you would think they would take their revenue where ever they can get it. Chances are this will never get off the ground. As people have stated earlier there are too many holes in the clause and if it did, you can bet your arse they will have to strip it down and even if it does get passed, it would take a good while before it would come into effect let alone enforced.

Sure it has holes, but the California legislature is stupid as fuck. I wouldn't be so confident it won't pass. People love to seize on sensationalized issues to make political hay.
