Headphones for Production (Dr DRE Studio Beats?)

Sometimes I need to use headphones as sub bass is not welcome at the early hours of the morning by the people who live below!

I currently own a pair of HD25 SP-II's which I use for mixing... But they don't cut it for Bass, according to sennheiser they go down to 30hz...

A friend of mine recommended those Dr Dre studio headphones to me a while back, my instant reaction was to laugh at her suggestion but now a number of people have recommended these, are they any good?

Does anyone have any more suggestions?

Thanks! :)

i would say to stay way clear of them... you dont really want headphones that boost one part of the frequency spectrum like that..... Just stick to flat frequency lines ive always been taught

nah man I woudn't go there if I were you... you would probably be better off with sk aviators if you're willing to go in that direction.

The Senns probably do reach down that far it's just that they are boosted down there like most hifi gear. The Dre's have a huge boost and are lacking in the highs. Most likely your mixes will come out light on bass and very bright, not good. If you really think you need a bass boost in your headphones I am sure you could find something that sounds comparable for under 50 bucks. My cheap ass sony in-ears sound almost exactly the same. Don't waste your money. They are made by Monster, that's pretty much all that needs said if you know anything about Monster.

Thanks for the replies, I am probably going to go with these... http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR320550

Probably in 250 Ohms according to the tech specs my M Audio FW 410 should be able to power them fine, headphones ports support 30 - 600 ohms according to M Audio.

Cheers

well imo they might actually be good for what it is your trying to do (if i am correct in that you just want a way to hear what your bass is doing at night). you most likely wont get a good mix out of them as stated above but if your going to do proper mixing when you can out of the headphones and just want to know what is going on in the lowend not in relation to your mixdown but more in relation melody rythm groove etc. then the dres might actually work for you especially going back and forth with a better headphone.

I have a a pair of Ultrasone. Every Ultrasone headphones I've ever tried sound amazing. Now days they are much cheaper. When I bought them they were 350. Now you can get them without busting your wallet.

Seein as you love the Dre Beats, but Dre's headphones suck for producing, these are all around great. The bass sounds great in these phones, but its not boosting it. You won't regret these. Had mine for 4 years now.

FYI I went with the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros in 250 Ohm and I am happy with them :)

Thanks for all your help / advise!

HD25's have great low-end; turn your mixes down.

Good headphones but I hope you didn't buy them because they state the freq range is 5 - 35k because anything that goes all
the way down to 20hz is low enough. I don't think any producer would even consider trying to hit frequencies that low.

The best reviews I've heard for headphones less than $500 US are for Shure's SRH-840. They cost about $200 US, I have a pair, they sound very very good for the price. But I'm not a producer so you should ask around about them.
