Im looking to get into speaker design, or more importantly, sub design. it sounds fun, and i would rather build my own then buy em. that way i know a lot of love has gone into them :)

any links to articles or photos would be helpful, and any links to books would be great too. thanks!

ahh, so its not as simple as buying the elements, building a box, and some basic soldering then? really i know shit about it, but i would like to learn.

i do have access to some machining equipment, and a friend who builds guitar pedals...

so are there some links to like, beginning techniques, or just a general knowledge base online that i can devour?

lemme put it this way working with local sound guru building a rig after researching the shit
gonna cost me a couple grand for woofers alone and we're doing custom boxes.
a quality club sound with lower than pa gen costs bout 200$ or more solo 15"ers
for the beefey rigs

I'm going to offer another perspective.

There are several books on speaker design - even radio shack offers a series of books on speaker design, as well as components. If you know how to solder and can do some math for cabinet design, and can work with wood, than it's not actually that bad. We're not talking about etching PCBs here, We can do things more complicated than speaker design with some effort. and you didn't say that pricing was any issue!

You can do anything you put your mind to bro.

Just to inspire you, read this:

You can buy cones.
I don't think he meant specifically "building speakers" I think he means constructing cabinets, installing a crossover and premade cones.

ay-up, i'm new to the forum but might be able to help...

http://www.speakerplans.com/

is an excellent resource, loads of cabinet plans designed by Rog Mogale of Void Acoustics,

http://www.voidaudio.com/

as well as loads of discussions of various cabinet plans, pa theory, amps, signal processing and general industry stuff

i'd advise reading the faq, reading the old posts and searching the forum before posting any 'newbie' questions as loads of stuff has been answered in the past and theres no point going over old ground. by doing a bit of research you'll be able to ask the questions that will get you the best answers.

(sorry if that sounds patronising!!! its really not meant to...)

also check out prosoundweb.com the home of the lab horn forum, bwaarrpp....

http://www.proaudioparts.co.uk/

is a good supplier of drivers and cabinet hardware, as are

http://www.bluearan.co.uk/menu/index.php and

http://www.bkelec.com/Pro/PD.htm

if youve got any more questions i'd be glad to help out, send us a pm if you want...

peace.

speaker plans is your saviour, especially the forum

my advice would be to read everything you can on the subject, then determine the type of design you want to build. make sure you've got everything you need and don't skimp on using quality components! theres no point on running an amazing sub on a crap amp for example

my m8 cimon built this sub and you couldnt roll a joint if you sat on it. it looked pretty small but man was it loud. i can remember my hair moving under my hat lol... new tunes up on my space to test your subs out...
