Didn't "get" compression until I had a decent sound setup...

Post by amphibian » Fri Jan 07, 2011 5:21 am

So producing just over 6 months now, and I could never for the life of me figure out why someone would use compression. Producing on a pair of HD25s since around August, I just couldn't tell the difference or why it was necessary.

...

Skip 5 months ahead and I now have a pair of 8" JBL 2300s, along with the 10" sub, and I can now safely say, without a doubt that... ibiza is... dot dot dot....

... sorry, where was I. Oh yes - even the smallest amount of compression I can now hear. Applied to my drums last night aka NY compression, and I couldn't believe how much a difference it made.

Moral of the story is - have a decent sound setup so you can hear wtf you're doing! :D

Yeah man, I either produce through my laptops speakers... i.e no bass, headphones worth like £5... Which kicked the bucket today.

This is why I do not understand EQ'ing much or Compression etc, I can't bloody hear it in action lol!

Broke as hell lately, struggling to find a job. Hopefully something crops up so I can get equipment sorted. Them JBL's pricey?

We got them for a super-awesome price. They're usually around $AUD2000 (just under), we got them for about $1200. Including stands, and all cables thrown in. They're one of the best (if not the best) speakers for their price range. Spent about 6 months reading reviews, talking to people, listening to them.etc. before buying.

Highly recommend the great guys at djwarehouse.com.au :) Helpful, supportive, just all-round good guys :)

You've only been producing 6 months?

I now officially hate you.

I've been producing two years and your already better than me :\ it's not faaaaaiiiiir. I might have a tantrum.

EDIT: please tell me you had a musical background before producing? If not then massive props are in order...well massive props either way but still..

Cheers man but I disagree - your productions are far, far better produced than my own.

And no - no musical background at all. I tried picking up multiple instruments but they never stuck with me. Dubstep changed all that :)

If you like my previous stuff, you're gonna kill me for my newest wip (check wip thread) :P

Maybe from a technical point of view I have an edge but your composition/melodies are boss mate. Checked out your work in progress, gonna leave some feedback on the soundcloud link ;) nice stuff

Ah man, that must be like eating soup with a fork!

Get some half decent headphones for now... Doesn't really matter what ones, even some generic hi-fi speakers will improve your sounds.

Yeah I'll be getting some half decent headphones within the next few weeks when I actually have some cash to do me over for a bit :D

I'm still waiting for my monitors to get here from Germany.
I'm working with my Hi-Fi's speakers that were made in like 94!
They're suprisingly good, go right down to 30hz, bit sharp on the highs though.. -q-

I may have misunderstood you there but New York compression isn't the act of compressing drums, its another name/nickname for parallel compression where you compress the signal & mix it back with the original signal.

If he was using it with a kick drum to give a pumping sensation to some pads or something that would make sense though. That's what I assumed when I read it anyway *shrugs*
