Stuck..

Basically, I took a break for about a week, to get over some writers block..

I've come back to it, and still can't seem to do anything.. I create a little melody, then I get bored of it, and have to move on to something else, it frustrates me, and I can't produce when I'm frustrated.

I'm motivated, and inspired, but I just feel stuck...

I even try creating other genres of music, but I know I want to create Dubstep, so I kind of just rush them.

So I end up just creating Patches / Presets ... I guess that's good, so I can use them later.

Any advice?

Find some good music theory (if you need it)

It will inspire you.

Just like the link 3za posted. Im sure these is plenty in there to get you thinking, and wanting to experiment.

I bought this a couple of days ago

Im only a few pages into it so far, theres a little snippet in there that reads "Our intention upon compiling this book is that the reader will be putting it down on a regular basis as the urge to try out a new musical technique is too hard to resist"

That, to me,sounds like a great recipe for beating the block.

The "music theory for dummies" book is actually decent. I was surprised...

Read the whole thing last year, was very helpful.

when i feel stuck i listen to loads of music, like loads of different stuff but not too much of what you're trying to make (dubstep). eventually you'll hear something inspiring and you get some ideas and it all starts rolling again, for me at least.

I try to not think about it too much, but I always end up over thinking it, even though it's really not that serious..

I guess I just have to chill out a bit :W:

Limit yourself to 1 synth, and 1 fx plugin. See what you can make.

Work on one element at a time, specifically ones your not blocked on. If you can write neat little synth lines today, do it, lay down a great big long ass sequence of the synth, play it solo, and work on it. This comes back to that whole make-each-instrument-interesting-by-its-self bit... Take that 16 bar synth, make as many fills as you can to it, put it through 80 different filter banks and automate the piss out of them, automate in clever delays, flangers, go, off, wittit. By the time your done youll have 128 bars of that one synth line that STAY interesting the whole time, ready to be stemmed down and thrown in a tune next time the vibes right.

Same with drums, if all your feeling is drums, make the most ridiculously perfect/humanized/realistic patterns you can, whatever your feelin, get em right, and throw em in as part of the arsenal for the future.

Trust.

But if there's anything else, go ahead and throw it at me ;D

When I force myself to try and make music I make shit or just mess around. Dont force it. Do something that inspires you maybe? listen to your fav producers or whatever it is that helps just dont force it.
