Expenses for major set ups!

Hi all,

This thread is gonna be pretty hit n miss but im trying to calculate 'roughly' how much wonga im gonna need to buy all the gear needed for dj'in and production. basically i want to know what your kit consists of, what software you use (how you aquired it also) how much youve at a guess spent on dubs/digital and if you even bother buying them? any listings of kit from mixers to mac books literally anything aswell as the price you paid list the year bought and wether it wa second hand or not! i know this thread will really help me out if not anyone else.

Surely too much for a mixer at 800 quid when second hand?
If you're looking at some good CD decks CDJ400s are good.
Serato is better than traktor tbh, worth investing in that imo.

Yeah i understand that, without sounding disrespectful i posted it thinking that if people could give figures where to buy or even what stuff to avoid, tips on what to look for when buying second hand then yeah post up otherwise just click to another thread (;

It depends what you want to do man. Theres no point in being the guy with all the gear and no idea.
I've got:
Monitors: £250 (Krk rp5's)
Soundcard: £150 (e-mu 0404, now redundant see below)
Mixer: Korg Zero8 £830 (Has firewire interface, hence redundant 0404)
Keyboard: Axiom 25 £75
Midi controller: Novation Launchpad £100
Custom Production PC: £950 (including peripherals)
Mic: Rode NT1A £150.

As well as a few other bits I have begged borrowed or stole from various people (electribe, padkontrol + a big keyboard)

HOWEVER, stuff that I actually use for producing (regularly) = PC + Keyboard + Monitors (and obviously mixer as interface but not as a mixer)


The other stuff is for live stuff. You really don't need much apart from a computer and some decent speakers for producing, a keyboard maybe. All of the other things are just toys for me really.
You seem to know what you wanna do in terms of DJ-ing so I will leave you to that.

In terms of where to get new stuff, I would recommend Digital Village, they will beat any price from any other store (sometimes by quite a margin) and they give you a 4 year warranty on stuff. For second hand stuff try http://www.mjq.co.uk (old studio equipment retailer, so when a studio goes bust these guys normally get all of the stuff.) or the soundonsound readers ads.

Oh... and I personally reckon Traktor kicks the shit out of Serato, but it's preference really.

Yeah it did seem a bit pricey till i found out it had only been used once by a bloke who had it bought for him as a present and didnt want to include it in his kit as he was a standard 60's disco dj! flight case came with it too so i werent bother (DJM 800)

I cant ask which is better cause everyones different but anyone know what makes traktor better in certain respects and vise versa for serato?

EDN, thanks for the post appreciate the info, yeah does look to be that way but i just landed an awesome paid job for a year but it might be terminated after that so im gonna buy everythin ill want now i intend to get the no how! me and my associate's really into the scene and music in general most of them at collage/unis studying up which i will be after my jobs finished! if it does that is lol anyways nuff life story shit, do you know any good websites/books/resources for looking up all the basics to production/dj'in and basically scientific music concepts? lol dont expect ya too but anyone who basically can help please do!

Im also wanting someone to chat to about building up a proper system primarily for dubstep and pumping that sub bass out there! willing to make my own boxes the lot but i need to do alot of research and knowing where to start and what to look into is brain numbing! obvs i realise that sound systems on the level of E.G iration steppas system would take years and funds but i pretty much am ready myself for that as im not alone in this mission!

christ knows loads of monies worth of stuff, fortunately i didnt have to buy it all as i work in a little studio so most of its not mine. i'd estimate upwards of £20,000 worth of stuff not including my stuff.

my stuff is probably approaching about 4 grand, monitors were £800 (mackie hr824 mk1, got them second hand about 5 years ago), akai s1100 £80, dynacord echochord tape delay £250, Fostex 16 track reel to reel £500, pair of technics £300, needles £100ish, serato £300ish, laptop £300ish, akg drum mic set was about £500, sm57 was somewhere between £60-£80, drumkit cost me about £300, my old audio interface was about £200 (dont need to use it any more but its still laying around somewhere in case i ever need it), and im going to pick up a hammond organ/leslie speaker on saturday which is costing me another £540.

yeah that all works out at about £4230 including the hammond.

god knows how much i've spent on vinyl in the past, probably approaching a grand or so. im not even gonna try and figure it out.

flight cases £150 - only losers would haul there own 1210s and Ecler into a club, most clubs are gonna have nicer stuff then you on the house anyway... budget here dude you dont need all that.

IDK, producing musics basically free dude, dont assume you need to spend all this, youcould learn the concepts on a 100 dollar budget, and buy all this once you know its for you.

This needs to be emphasised. I've spent less than a grand and I've got a setup that I'm perfectly happy with and suits my needs just fine. Literally the most expensive thing I have is my decks which are some of the higher end Numark's and even then they were only £150.

I (and I'm sure a lot of people on this forum are the same) only really use in built plugins in my DAW and maybe a couple of others (it depends on your style though, I use orchestral sample libraries because I write orchestral music) you DON'T need massive or waves plug in's to make dubstep, or even most electronic music. You are a lot better off starting with one piece of equipment (excluding some good speakers or headphones) i.e. your DAW and learning that to the fullest extent you can, and then if you NEED anything else then get it.

Somethings like turntables its worth not skimping on, because you will be using other peoples equipment when playing out so I would say you are better of getting some technics straight up. However you can learn on anything so decide for yourself.

If you really have money burning a hole in your pocket then just invest it in pot or hookers... or give it to me...

Yeah Deffinately agree with ya all people dont run before walkin yada yada yada. But For say you all take my word on i know its for me iv seen people on most programmes just only used logic production wise, done my early music qualifications and know im gonna do the rest unless im like hit by a bus or fall ill lol (; so yeah producings deffinately what im gonna dedicate myself too for a while and hey if i wanna buy loads of kit ill buy loads of kit ha, i deffinately agree i need to study up! which again if anyone knows books links or just any general info to how to become a wee bit more knowledgable then your a sickwhatman!

In terms of the sound system and equipment i actually live out in the country parts of leciester, i dont wanna put on official raves but i actually do want my own iration style system one day im looking into how to build the boxes up myself all the acoustics and where to source everything again WITH MOST RESPECT IM NOT HERE FOR A LECTURE

I see it seems im just needlessly spending yeah i paid a bit too much here and there or buying shit i dont really need.. guess i have a spending problem xD ADDICT!! but better than smoking it all to nothing or giving into the girlfriends every demand gold diggin mo'facka!
