I've heard this name thrown around to describe a few artists, specifically James Blake and Mount Kimbie. Is it just me or is this a really, really dumb name? Some artists make music farther away from the typical dubstep sound, there's no need to come up with a new sub-genre to describe it imo.

I think applying any sort of "tense" to a genre of music is a bit silly. For instance, future garage, what about when it's 5 years old? Won't it just be garage then?

I doubt the term 'post-dubstep' was coined by any of the artists that supposedly fit the sound. Rather, it's an after the fact label people need to come up with to explain why this sounds different from that.

Dubstep is broad. Post dubstep as a name is just being a pretentious hispter tnuc

magazines and bloggers need clicks and tweets. they want to say they "called it first" before anyone else. by declaring buzzing genres over, they know your emotions will get raised. this tactic is as old as brown bread. the media did the exact same thing to garage, 2step and jungle.

post-dubstep as in, it came as a result of dubstep, it's made by people who were obviously very influenced by dubstep but it's pretty different from dubstep both in tempo and overall sonority, to the point that people could perhaps say "nah that's not really dubstep though". see for reference post-rock, post-punk, post-hardcore etc.

Personally I think it's a silly name and I don't use it, but I'd expect the reasoning behind it to be pretty much what I said.

Like almost all music genres? The media throws several words around and eventually one out of the dozen sticks. 'Heavy metal' was coined by the media and I don't hear anyone complain about that. Genre names will either stick with the scene in question or not. No need to worry about it.

You're right about that. I think the thing that grates on nerves here is how prolific the name inventing is getting; it used to be that you had to be Lester Bangs or someone with serious musical rep before people'd start using your epithets, but now all you have to do is have a blog or be a writer for Pitchfork or whatever.

Further, some folks get really hung up on names - deciding to be _______ just because the name sounds cool first and foremost, to hell with the music (see: styles ending in "-core" nowadays.) That's the cart leading the horse.

Never heard of it before this thread, but thanks for the idea! Until now, my itunes playlist for that sound was called “Hotflush" whether it came from that label or not, but now it’ll be POST DUBSTEP Blame yourself.

i feel like people also try to use these terms to distance themselves from dubstep, since they don't want to be lumped in with a bunch of robot farts and transformer sounds, which is understandable. i'm still leaving in the dream that dubstep can be whatever you want it to be, as long as it's got a good sub foundation

i personally don't see what's that bad about it. it very simply puts all the "wotdyacallitukfunkyexperimentalcontinuum" sounds in one neat bracket.

"Post" is a term that's been used before (in relation to other art/periods of historical importance) and has stood the test of time.

A name is just name but also necessary, plus it's not as stupid as 99% of new names that been about the last few yrs!!!
