HELP! Routing analog synthesizer in to Ableton :(
I have a Roland Juno 106 and a Novation Nio Audio/Midi interface.I'll go into detail on how i've currently set it up to see if anyone can understand where I have went wrong:
- 1/4 cables from Rolands 'stereo OUTPUT' in to the microphone 1 and microphone 2 inputs on the Novation Nio.
- Midi cables running from the Juno's 'MIDI OUT' in to the Novation Nio's 'MIDI IN' and vice versa.
Inside abletons preferences I have set it up like this:
Audio Device:
- driver type - ASIO
- AUDIO device - Novation USB ASIO Driver
Midi/Sync:
-Control surface - None
-Input - Novation nio 2/4
-Output - Novation 2/4
That is how it currently set up and nothing is working.
If you google Novation Nio and Roland Juno 106 you'll be able to see pictures of the ports, I'm soso stuck and it's driving me crazy.
Thankyou for any help you can give,

Re: HELP! Routing analog synthesizer in to Ableton :(
In Ableton you'll need a midi channel. Then load an External Audio effect plugin from the standard Ableton Audio effects folder.
On your midi channel where it says "midi from" select your "Novation Nio" might say (Novation Nio Port 1) if you can't see that you haven't set it up right in the midi/sync preferences.
On the External Audio effect select your audio from Novation Nio inputs 1&2.
You might also need to turn on the monitor button on your channel strip I can't remember exactly.

So youre saying it has to be 'MIDI IN' to 'MIDI IN' and 'MIDI OUT' to 'MIDI OUT' ?static_cast wrote:wrong way round bruvDanielStafford wrote: - Midi cables running from the Juno's 'MIDI OUT' in to the Novation Nio's 'MIDI IN' and vice versa.

Re: HELP! Routing analog synthesizer in to Ableton :(
No, you want to sequence the Juno from Ableton, correct? So you need to route midi FROM the Novation TO the Juno.DanielStafford wrote:So youre saying it has to be 'MIDI IN' to 'MIDI IN' and 'MIDI OUT' to 'MIDI OUT' ?static_cast wrote:wrong way round bruvDanielStafford wrote: - Midi cables running from the Juno's 'MIDI OUT' in to the Novation Nio's 'MIDI IN' and vice versa.
So it's "MIDI OUT" on the Novation to "MIDI IN" on the Juno.
EDIT: didn't see the "vice versa", sorry. If you're running two MIDI cables then that's right...

Have you tried the headphone output on the Juno to see if it's making any noise at all (from MIDI control that is)?DanielStafford wrote:Yeah man, i can't for the life of me figure out how to sequence it, proper stressign me outstatic_cast wrote:No, you want to sequence the Juno from Ableton, correct? Re: HELP! Routing analog synthesizer in to Ableton :(
If the Juno is making sound when you sequence it from Ableton then the problem is obviously just getting it into the Ableton mixer. I might be stating the obvious, but in Ableton you need another Audio track - set the input to the relevant audio device and input channel, and set the monitor button (In/Out/Auto) to "In". Have you done that?

Underneath where it says MIDI on the midi channel in that little box, it has the options 'none' 'mixer' and 'external audio effect'. Does this mean I have set the midi/sync wrong in my preferences? If so do you want me to list how i have configured them and maybe you could direct me on how to set them up right?Promise One wrote:In Ableton you'll need a midi channel. Re: HELP! Routing analog synthesizer in to Ableton :(
Oh, I meant I have my headphones plugged into the synth itself, and there is sound coming directly from that. Ableton is still recieving no signal from my synth :\static_cast wrote:If the Juno is making sound when you sequence it from Ableton then the problem is obviously just getting it into the Ableton mixer. Re: HELP! Routing analog synthesizer in to Ableton :(
Right. Did you make that audio track? Did you set the Novation mic inputs as the Audio track inputs? Did you set the monitor button to "in"?DanielStafford wrote:Oh, I meant I have my headphones plugged into the synth itself, and there is sound coming directly from that. Also, does plugging in a pair of headphones maybe disable the main outputs on the synth?

Ok check your live preferences, load these up and click on the midi/sync tab on the left.DanielStafford wrote:Underneath where it says MIDI on the midi channel in that little box, it has the options 'none' 'mixer' and 'external audio effect'. Under the heading "midi ports" you should see Novation Nio. The "track" button needs to be on next to this.
Have you got the Novation driver installed on your mac yes?

Re: HELP! Routing analog synthesizer in to Ableton :(
Right ok, under midi ports it says 'Input' which is set to Nio - 'Output' which is set to 'Microsoft wavetable gs synth' - and another 'Output which is set to Nio. These are all set with 'Track on'Promise One wrote:Ok check your live preferences, load these up and click on the midi/sync tab on the left.DanielStafford wrote:Underneath where it says MIDI on the midi channel in that little box, it has the options 'none' 'mixer' and 'external audio effect'. Above 'Midi Ports' I have set the 'control surface' to 'Uc33e' and the input and output to the nio.
Is this right?

Re: HELP! Routing analog synthesizer in to Ableton :(
also if u get problems with latency when recording into ableton i find using the track delay feature useful, its pretty easy to setup so theres no delay when triggering midi clips from your synth and recording them in
