sweep/pad EQ effect (use auto filter?)

(note: I am using live
I'm making an edit of a old soul/disco tune, mashing it up a bit (it's too short for dancefloor) and the original has a really nice long strings sweep/pad sound just before the beat comes in - I wanted to spice it up a bit so I have put some FX on it: Auto Pan > Auto Filter > Chorus.
First off, should the chorus be before or after the filter?
Second, I am having trouble with the filter - I want to get the effect when a large long sound is squished into a very small, trebly sound and then comes back to the full spectrum just at the end of the sweep (to get maximum effect) - I am using an auto filter atm and I am not sure if that is the best approach. I have tried using EQ3 and EQ8 and automating the EQ which sounds like it should work but I am having trouble automating it to sound right. Maybe I just need to give it a few goes manually and then edit the automation on the time line but is there an easier way to do it?
cheers
