So I'm feeling rather ambitious and I want to build my own. Anyone have any experience doing this and/ or know where I could get some design plans? Is it worth the man hours to build one or should i just save up to buy one?

Taking economies of scale etc into account, you probly won't save much.

But you'll have earnt your self some good, if geeky, bragging rights.

I wanna build one so i can take it with me when I play out at clubs without a sub.

It depends on what you see as portable. There are some 15" basscabs but they usually have two drivers in them so they aren't that small anyway and I haven't seen anyone that made they're own cab use a single 15" for bass, so I'd make a single 18" reflex cab if I was you. You'll still need some room on the backseat of your car tho..

These are pretty simple designs and the cheapest option to build these are with a second hand driver and MDF. It'll probably be around £170 or something. Just make sure the ports are exactly as on the plan or better make sure you just stick to the plan :p
There are better cabs and drivers out there but those are bigger or more expensive and that's probably not what you want. One cab will be able to sit in the back seat, 2 if your car isn't that small. so your mate can still come allong Mind you, one cab isn't gonna shake beerbottles of tables but it'll give you a good sense of bass. I'd say one would be able to make 80 people dance or something, depends on the room aswell.

Something you also have to consider is that these are passive. So you'll need to buy an amp aswell or the place where you'll play has to have an amp for it and you'll have to link it to the system there and that can be a bit of work because some might not even have a crossover etc.

It's fun to build speakers and you'll have some satisfaction

Btw it doesn't take much time to build these cabs. There aren't any weird angles or stuff. You'll probably be able to get the wood cut at the play you buy it and after that it's just a matter of nailing, glueing, cutting out the hole for the driver and maybe the ports and getting those done proper.
I'd say if you have a good workspace (not a mess :p) a drill and glue it will be finished in a day.
