Lorn’s sound developed through a series of beat tapes and EPs, including a brutal four-tracker Trained by the Pain, which appropriated classics by Mobb Deep and The Notorious B.I.G into his own menacing compositions.
Fast forward to 2010, and Lorn releases the seething, sinister Nothing Else on Brainfeeder via Ninja Tune/Inertia. An album of deliciously crisp production mastered by Clark (Warp Records), it was a counterpoint to the grimy and twisted work of fellow Brainfeeders Samiyam, Ras G and Daedelus. The crushing pressure of lead single ‘Tomorrow’ suggests a familiarity with seminal UK dubstep acts like Digital Mystikz and Loefah, but he’s equally informed by lush synths that evoke Warp Records classics from the nineties and neck-snapping boom bap drums of golden era hip hop.
Lorn followed Nothing Else with the None An Island EP which included the haunting ‘Until There Is No End’ and the Samiyam collaboration ‘Brainwaves’, and also contributed the enthralling ‘Soft Room’ to Ninja Tune’s epic twentieth anniversary box set.
Hot on the heels of FlyLo’s latest triumphant Australian tour with The Gaslamp Killer, Lorn lands in Australia for the first time with a Brisbane date at the Step Inn on Friday February 18. Support comes from Brisbane's own Speaker Wrath who will debut their brand new live show with both Syntax and Dave Wrath getting busy on pads and fx. They have been locked away in their studio perfecting this new setup that allows them to reconstruct and mash out beats from across the global bass scene as well as their own productions, and all in real-time. Rounding out the night will be specially compiled DJ sets from Swob (repping moody bass and noir beats), Danck (in an effects-laden, cross-genre dancefloor assault) and the one and only Walrii (peppering his eclectic selections with previously unheard productions of his own).
As usual, resident Dank Morass VJs Archi Lancaster & ATLASt will be bending minds with live visuals.
It all adds up to one of the most serious parties of the year for underground beats in a completely intimate (and air-conditioned) setting!
