How do you deal with ear fatigue? I would say drum and bass and dubstep are the genres that are most effective at making your ears bleed...

Nothing makes my ears fatigue just listening to it, but producing any sort of EDM requiring drum loops pounding away on your DAW for hours will do it… After 3/4 hrs or so my ears are done, even if I keep the audio low… Breaks are your friend.

you need to take breaks. its important.

every hour or 2 at least spend 15 minutes away from your computer to let your ear hairs go back to normal...

Besides normal breaks throughout the day - it is important to take longer breaks as well. When I was doing a Recording Engineering course, I came home during the Christmas break feeling like my ears were completely useless...

So I made a strong vow to not listen to any music (especially on headphones) all break (ie - 3 weeks or so). If a room was too noisy, I would sequester myself to my own room and read for a few hours, etc etc.

I came back the next semester with my ears primed and ready. Obviously you don't need to take 3 weeks off, but I would take a day or two off here and there to keep your ears fresh.

the impact of the drums and subbass definitely do a number on your ears. its a serious problem for me as i have mild tinnitus and hyperacusis and do not want it to get worse. esp when out in clubs or in front of my monitors for hours i wear ear plugs. during mixdowns i take em out and really listen to how things are sitting.

taking breaks, as mad ep said, even for days or weeks at a time can bring your ears back to "normal".

My right ear is pretty much shot as it is--it’s very very minor right now, just a slight attenuation, probably -5%, but I know when I get old its going to crap out on me, years before my friends.

Years of DJing (shoulder holding it up on my right side) and between age 19-24 a car soundsystem that was so loud I used to plug tissue in my ear to keep it from hurting, instead of just turning it down… :? So stupid.

But now I’m wiser. Maybe too late, but wiser. LOL

Breaks = Standard.

Volume = Set it comfortably when I start, and LEAVE it.

i used to listen to my ipod all the time whenever i went out of the hosue.. until it broke, and now i havent been bothered to fix it. but today i aprreciate even more, both listening to music and producing music. this is so true as others above have already stated your ears neeeds silence from time to time! just take regular pauses from 'sound' overall

Keep your ears clean, for one.. However gross it sounds wax buildup isn't healthy for you as it can dampen sound..

Also, take lots of breaks. I usually go and sit in the kitchen, have a cigarette and a cuppa after every 'main' job in a tunes one..

For instance, I just laid down the pads and melody and half of the drums of a new tune for 15-30 minutes went and played my DS for half an hour while I had a tea... dun-know getting a genesis emulator for your DS and playing some megaman! hahaha.

I guess an important thing to say is that your tune isn't going anywhere and creativity won't leave you if you're locked into a tune because you took a break from it for an hour, if it does then oh well - come back to it another day you shouldn't be in a rush to finish music.

Swimming can fuck with your ears, so I quit.
Tabaco can fuck with your ears, so I quit, for the rest of my body.
Ganja can fuck with you ears, but I ain't quiting, because it's so fucking great.
I heard dairy can aswell, but I drink a pint of milk a day, eat a yogurt, and eat chesse most days. Is dairy that bad???

Also don't stick stuff in your ear.

WHAT A POEM

Anyway. I do see the flip side here though. When ideas flow and you're really into it you just dont want to stop!! But yes, breaks, bits of TV, a nice coffee, a sly wank, read the paper (see page 3, thus another sly wank). Just do normal shit for a while. Check Facebook... :u:

That was not ment to be a poem :cornlol:

But I have now write you one...

When making Borgore bass, always remember...
To keep your levels low, not for your neighbour...
But for your hearing.

When making Trolley Snatcha tearout, always remember...
To take breaks, not just for ideas...
But for your hearing.

When making Skrillex sounds, always remember...
To clean your ears, not so you look dapper...
But for your hearing.

When making Benga beats, always remember...
To stop smoking, not just for you health...
But for you hearing.

But if you only remember one thing...
let it be this...
3za is a badman poet.

Peace.

This is bad advice. This is trading actual mechanical damage to your ears for chemical damage. Both cigs and caffeine are very bad for your ear, and by extension, your body.

I have permanent hearing damage. Right side is shot in higher freqs. Really really, I mean really sucks.

What sucks even more, is that I don't really get into the zone when making music if it isn't pretty damn loud. I'm in kind of a loudness arms race right now, and I'm quit certain I'll be spending the later years of my life painting.

Take breaks.

Does anyone know why one of my ears might "crackle" every now and again?
A running tap will cause it. Noise from a car will also set it off for a while and I occasionally get it when I wake up in the morning...

Can damage be reversed to a certain extent??
